In 1872, 1. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of
Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting oftrees,
and
this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of
more than a million trees in Nebraska, and
Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and
trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and
water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean
the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife,
and
trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes,
fuel for our fires, and beautify our community, and
trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic
vitality of business areas, and beautify our community, and
trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual
renewal.
Now, Therefore, I,
, Mayor ofthe City of
, do hereby proclaim
as
~ Arbor Day
in the City of , and I urge all
citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our
trees and woodlands, and
Further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the
well-being of this and future generations.

Invitation to Arbor Day Celebration
In 1876 Minnesota became the fourth state to adopt Arbor Day as an annual
celebration. Today, Chanhassen celebrates Arbor Day each year in order set aside
a time to consider what trees do for us and our community. Trees add beauty and
character to our neighborhoods, reduce energy costs, increase property values,
reduce pollution, and help us replace trees we've lost in our community. Perhaps
Elton Trueblood said it best when he wrote, "A man has finally begun to discover
the meaning of human life when he plants a tree under which he knows full well
he will never sit." Let us plant today, the trees of tomorrow.
I invite all area residents, their families and friends to Chanhassen's Arbor Day
event on Saturday ~ May 5 at City Center Park and the Chanhassen Library.
From 10 am to noon, a variety of activities will be offered. Kid's can plant seeds
to take home with them, have their picture taken with Woodsy Owl, pick out a free
seedling and choose a fun design for face painting. Local naturalist Jim Gilbert
will be on hand at 10:30 am in the Chanhassen Senior Center to talk about spring
happenings in the Minnesota outdoors. Families will love the Enviro-show by
Tricia and the Toonies at 11 am at the Chanhassen Library. The Carver-Scott
Master Gardeners will be available at the Chanhassen library to answer any
questions about plants or their problems. The annual tree sale will also be
happening from lOam - noon in the east parking lot. In the morning, volunteer
groups will be cleaning local parks and gathering for an appreciation lunch with
the Mayor at noon. I encourage everyone to come to this free event.
