Monthly City Council update
Fire Department Overview:
Staffing is at 44 active firefighters as of May 18, 2007; allocation is 45 PTEs
As of May 6,2007, we responded to 190 calls, up 26 calls from 164 at this same time last year. We
responded to a house fire on May 13th and provided mutual aid to Victoria Fire Department for a laundry
room fire.
Fire Training:
This month training consisted of simulated fire attack and rescue at the Southwest Training Facility in
Edina. We also did training involving hoseline deployment, sprinkler and standpipe connections. In
June we will be doing medical stations and water rescue training.
Fire Marshal:
Recently we had two very minor grass fires and a house fire at 6271 Hummingbird Road on Sunday,
May 13th at approximately 8:20 pm. The home sustained major structural damage and the occupants lost
most of their personal possessions. The garage and a home studio were saved thanks in part to the fire
door between the house and garage and actions taken by the Fire Department. Mutual aid was received
from the Excelsior and Victoria Fire Departments with Eden Prairie Fire Department standing by at
Station 1. While standing by, Eden Prairie was dispatched to a deck fire on Minnewashta Court. On
Monday the Chanhassen Fire Department with help from the Carver County Sheriffs Office, the
Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office and a private fire investigator conducted the house fire

investigation. We are currently waiting on a final report from an electrical engineer who was also on
scene. There were three firefighters who received minor injuries, were treated and released.
Fire Inspections:
New Construction - Gateway Apartments will be getting final inspections starting the week of May 21.
No problems are anticipated with this project. There is nothing new to report at Lifetime Fitness Office
at this time. The fire sprinkler plans have been reviewed and approved and are currently awaiting
building finish plans. Waytek on Galpin Court is completed. Sign Source is moving into the old
Waytek building on Quattro Drive. Their move should be completed in the next few weeks. Custom
Fab finished their addition and the Certificate of Occupancy was signed last week. Heartland America's
new addition recently got under way with structural steel being erected this week. Town and Country
has a number of townhomes under various stages of construction with new homeowners moving in now
on a regular basis. Also, the clubhouse at Sienna Corporation received their Certificate of Occupancy
for use as a sales office.
Existing Building Inspections - Those being inspected are Target, Cub Foods, Walgreens and Holiday
Service Station. These businesses are being inspected as a requirement for getting a permit for selling
fireworks.
Fire Prevention:
We will be gearing up for summer Safety Camp, National Night Out, 4th of July celebration and
neighborhood block parties. The Fire Department recently participated with General Mills at their
environmental picnic at Lake Ann on Saturday, May 12. Also, fire extinguisher training was given to
approximately 40 employees at Roberts Automatic Products on Lake Drive.
