July 23, 2007 SUBJ: Well No.2 Emergency Repairs, PW034 REQUESTED ACTION Staff is requesting the City Council add this item to the Consent Agenda to authorize expenditure for repair of Well No.2 in an amount not to exceed $35,000. DISCUSSION On Monday, July 16, Well No.2, located at 191 West 77th Street, suffered a failure. The well is a "line shaft" type pumping system where a motor resides above-ground and approximately 450 feet of shaft extends below the ground to a pump impeller that draws water up the casing surrounding the shaft and transmits it to the East Water Treatment Plant. The failure is due to wear in the shaft and bearings as they extend down into the aquifer, which revealed itself in the form of serious vibration. The well was immediately shut down to prevent shaft separation and "dropping" the shaft into the well. Contractors were dispatched to assess the problem and determined that it would have to be pulled out, which occurred on Wednesday, July 18. Very preliminary estimates are that repair costs is $35,000.00. This well was identified and scheduled for rehabilitation in the CIP this fall under Project Number W-032. Staff is working with the Contractor to fix the well as soon as possible. RECOMMENDATION Due to current weather conditions and heavy water usage, staff recommends that the City Council approve the allocation of emergency funds for the repair of Well No.2. in the amount not to exceed $35,000. c: Kelley Janes, Utility Superintendent The City ot Chanhassen · A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a charming downtown, thriving businesses, winding trails, and beautiful parks.
