City CouncillPark and Recreation Commission Joint Meeting Discussion Topics
April 28, 2008, 6:30 p.m.
Prepared by Park and Recreation Commission () ~
1. Seminary Fen - What role should the City take in the preservation of the property
recently purchased by the State of Minnesota?
2. What role should the City take in working to acquire additional parcels surrounding the
current acquisition?
3. In 1999, the City acquired 32 acres containing a large woodland and wetlands, which is
commonly referred to as the "Fox Family" acquisition. This property was purchased for
preservation purposes using proceeds from the 1997 Park and Open Referendum. The
area surrounding this parcel is slated to receive sewer and water services in 2010. What
work would the Council like to see from the Commission regarding the future
development of this park preserve?
4. The City has not acquired land for ball field development in nearly twenty years. The
last parcel purchased for this use was Bandimere Park in 1989. Athletic leagues in the
city, especially youth baseball, softball, soccer, football and lacrosse have experienced
large growth spurts since that time. Requests for ball fields currently surpass the number
of fields available. Future growth in these leagues will exacerbate this situation. What is
the Council's position on acquiring additional land for ball field development?
5. The City is known for its successful special events program including the Summer
Concert Series, 4th of July Celebration, Dave Huffman 5K Memorial Run, Halloween
Party, February Festival, Easter Egg Candy Hunt. New programs include the Chan Jam
and Kid's Sync Karaoke. What are the Council's thoughts on the continued expansion of
our recreation and special events program?
6. Are there projects that the City Council is currently working on that the Park &
Recreation Commission could provide assistance?
7. Do you have any questions/discussion topics that you would like to discuss?
