MEMORANDUM
TO:
Mayor & City Council
FROM:
Todd Gerhardt, City Manager

Continue Discussion Concerning Partnership with School District
112 on the Construction of a New Baseball/Softball Stadium
On June 12, the Mayor and I met with Superintendent Jennings and School
District 112 Board Chairman Rod Pranks concerning the new baseball/softball
stadium at Chanhassen High School. Specifically, they are requesting that we
reopen discussions concerning a joint partnership and the city making a
$600,000 contribution to this project.
At our meeting, we discussed the city's need for additional outdoor facilities to
keep up with the demand for recreational leagues in the community.
Additionally, concern was raised about the inability to serve alcohol on school
property if town team baseball used the facility, and the lack of "community
support" for a town baseball team.
In response to our concerns, the school district would like to discuss the
following in exchange for the city contribution to the new stadium:
1. Enter into an agreement that would give the City of Chanhassen priority
scheduling of outdoor facilities with the exception of district
programming requirements (co-curricular activities, athletic events,
physical education classes, etc.).
2. That the school board would research and discuss the possibility of
allowing the sale of alcohol on school property during town team
baseball games.
3.
Staff contacted both the Chanhassen Athletic Association (CAA) and
Chaska Area Youth Baseball (which includes Chanhassen youth), and
both organizations support the project.
I have placed this item on our work session to allow Superintendent Jennings the
opportunity to discuss the school district's proposed changes since our May 27th
meeting regarding a city contribution to the new baseball/softball stadium.
The City 01 Chanhassen · A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a charming downtown, thriving businesses, winding trails, and beautiful parks. A great place to live, work, and play.
