WaterWise Conservation Contest
As part of the WaterWise program, the City sponsored a water conservation
contest open to all residents this summer. Contest participants were challenged to
reduce their water consumption over the months of June, July and August. A total
of 20 residents and their households signed up for the contest.
The summer months were chosen because this is typically a time of higher water
usage due to increased activity at home and irrigation. The typical four-member
household in Chanhassen uses 940 gallons of water per day. Our first place
winner had an average daily usage of 483 gallons per day. Over the summer, an
average home uses 86,480 gallons in three months. One of the households in the
contest only used 14,000 gallons over all of those months and 17 out of the 20
households participating came in under the 86,000 gallon mark.
The final contest results are as follows:
Household Percent decrease
Zbinden 63.93%
Hoffman 62.40%
Stranq 60.26%

Reducing water usage is an important step in long-term water conservation. Within the contest,
however, there were a number of households whose water consumption totals were low to begin
with. Starting at such a low point gave little room for a decrease. In order to recognize the
households with low usage, the top five households are:
1. Foster: 83% less than the average household
2. Olsen: 73% less
3. Neuman: 73% less
4. Roudebush: 61 % less
5. Larsen: 59% less
The City Council will be presenting all of the contestants with rewards for their participation.
The top household for water conservation will be receiving a $50 gift certificate to a Chanhassen
business, two complimentary show tickets to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, and a Chanhassen
Pack that includes merchandise, coupons, and passes. The next two runners-up will receive
similar prizes without the gift certificate and the remaining participants will receive the
Chanhassen Packs.
