Approve Quotes for Standby Generators for Utility Department
PW016NNN
PROPOSED MOTION
"The City Council approves purchase of two portable generator quotes for
standby generation of Wells 12 and 13 in the amount of $118,494.02 to Ziegler
Caterpillar Power Systems."
City Council approval requires a simple majority vote of the City Council
present.
DISCUSSION
Staff is requesting purchasing two portable generators to be used as backups in
the event electrical power is interrupted at utility stations such as wells or sanitary
lift stations. The City currently has one portable standby generator that is parked
out at a west well for high zone water backup. The City also has one well that can
be generated by the east treatment plant permanent standby by generator for the
low zone area. In order to meet average day water usage in the event electrical
power is interrupted for an extended period, two additional low zone wells would
need to be generated. The City has rented standby generators at times during
power interruptions but these rental generators are in short supply and the City
may not be able to get a generator at the time it needs one. Staff had envisioned
purchasing one large standby generator to power two wells in the east well field,
however, with the well problems the City experienced in 2007, staff is now
recommending purchasing two smaller portable generators to give the City more
flexibility in which wells can be generated. The wells staff will most likely
generate in the event of prolonged power interruption are Wells 12 and 13. The
standby generator at Well #12 is also sized large enough to power the sanitary lift
station located nearby at the same time. Both generators will also be able to
power other City lift stations if necessary. Staff is planning to park one generator
at the east water treatment plant parking lot and the other at the public works
building.
The general specifications for each generator are as follows:
