Tobacco compliance checks
On 04-05-03, Deputy Jim Shelhamer ~868 and an underage decoy conducted tobacco compliance
checks in the city of Chanhassan.
The city of Chanhaasen has 17 businesses that sell tobaco3___ products. I am. pleased to tell you that
none of the businesses sold to the underage decoy.

Theft from Vehicle
Attention Chanhassen Business Watch Members:
Within the last two weeks, several incidents of theft from vehicle have occurred in the Chanlm~sen business
district. Businesses along downtown W.78~ Street, Park Road and the 18000 block of W78th Street were
targeted (see map attachment).
Occurring at~ dark, vehicle windows are being smashed and in-dash stereos taken.
In one of the incidents, a witness intentionally scared off two suspicious males who were tampering with a
vehicle. If you observe suspicious activity in progress, do not confront the susp~s), but immediately call 9-1-
1.
Recommendations:
If your stereo has a removable face plate, remove and secure the plate when you park your. car.
Always lock your car and remove valuables. Even though these incidents were forced entry, you can prevent the
more commonly occurring "crimes of opportunity".
Don't display your tapes or CDs inside your vehicle. Store only a few and hide those from view.
If you observe suspicious activity, such as someone tampering with or looking into vehicles,'call 9-1-1
immediately.
· Please share this information with co-workers, as the Sheriff's Office depends on citizens'to be alert and report
suspicious activity.

Theft From Vehicle-Daycare Centers
Attention Parents:
Recently daycare centers in the soath metro have been the target of numerous thefLs from
vehicles. Purses, checkbooks and wallets are being stolen from vehicles. These incidents
may be linked to identity theft. Thefts are occurring'while parents are inside dropping off
or picking up their children. The criminals are watching parking, lot activity, waiting for
parents to leave their vehicles unattended.
To date, Chanhassen daycares have not been affected. However, we are anticipating that
this band of criminals may target Chanhassen as they make their rounds through each

Secure all valuables. This is a crime of opportunity and can be prevented by always
locking'your vehicle. Take your purse, wallet or checkbook with you; or at least hide
valuables from plain view.
Immediate .ly report suspicious acfiviW, by calling 9-1-1. Suspicious activity would
include anyone tampering with or looking into vehicles, or sitting in a parked vehicle or
loitering near the daycare center. Do not confront the suspect(s). Try to obtain suspect
and vehicle description (i.e. license plate, number of .suspects, phy~sical description) and call
9-1-1 immediately.
