M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. in the amount of $143,619.07 for the reconstruction of the Lake Susan Regional Pond. DISCUSSION The City Council approved the plans and specifications for the above project and authorized the project to be put out for bid on February 24, 2003. The engineer's estimate, for the necessary improvements to the pond is $106,000.00. The funding for this project will come from the City's Surface Water Management Plan fund (Fund 720). This project is included in the Surface Water Management portion of the City's Capital Imra'ovement Plan. The City solicited bids from area contractors for the project. Bids were opened on March 17 at 1:00 p.m. A letter from Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik; and Associates (Bonestroo) is attached summazSzing the quotes. Bonestroo has recommended award of contract to S. M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. in the amount of $143,619.07. City staff concurs with this recommendation. S. M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. has previous experience in Chanhassen. The firm completed the extemion of Coulter Boulevard from Autumn Ridge to Century Boulevard. It is likely that the bids came in higher than expected for two reasons: 1. Winter consmacfion, as was assumed in the engineer's estimate, is often less expensive than at other times during the year. 2. The amount of material that must be transported for off-site disposal is greater than anticipated by the engineer who compiled the estimate. The bid price could be reduced if a larger quantity of material could be wasted within the City. Costs have been minimized to the extent possible by The City of Chenhalsen, A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a channing downtown, l:hriving businesses, winding trails, and beautiful parks. A gmat place to live, work,, and play. Todd Gerhardt March 24, 2003 Page 2 proposing the use of some material excavated at this location to fill the old channel from the Bluff Creek Remeandering Project (SWMP 12-Y) during Spring 2004. City staff has discussed alternative material disposal sites but has not identified any. There was a bid alternate that would allow the conRaetor to do winter construction; however, none of the bids reflected a si~tmificant cost savings for doing so. Therefore staff recommends awarding the contract to the low bidder. A~FACHMENTS 1.
