February 9, 2009 SUBJ: Lift Station No. 24 Rehabilitation, PW055X1: Approve Quote PROPOSED MOTION "The City Council approves quote in the amount of $34,346.25 to Quality Flow Systems, Inc. for piping and pump replacement at Lift Station 24." City Council approval requires a simple majority vote of the City Council present. BACKGROUND Annually, the City considers replacement of equipment for lift stations that are old, unreliable or cannot be properly maintained anymore. These replacements are designed to make the sanitary lift station network more reliable and reduce the likelihood of emergency calls and the potential for sewer backups. Currently, the City maintains 31 lift stations in the system. The repairs forthe lift station were generally identified in the 2008 Sanitary Sewer Comprehensive Plan and have recently been refined based on recent problems in the system. DISCUSSION Staff typically starts work on this annual project later in the year; however, staff is requesting replacement of piping and a failed pump at Lift Station 24 at this time. Lift Station 24 is located at the intersection of Lyman Boulevard and Auduboll Road and is the largest lift station the City maintains. The. station has 4 pumps which are as large as 90 horse power. The pump which failed is 15 years old and can no longer be fixed and needs to be replaced. Staff has reviewed the needs of the station and is requesting to replace the failed pump with a 65 .hors~ power pump. Staff had programmed this lift station to be rehabilitated in 201 0 with replacement of pumps but unfortunately one of the pumps did not make it until next year. g:\eng\public\pw055- lift stations (general)\bkg 0220909 Is annual rehabs -ls24 pump. doc The City of Chanhassen · A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a chamning downtown, thriving businesses, winding trails, and beautiful parks. Todd Gerhardt Lift Station No. 24 Rehabilitation February 9, 2009 Page 2 Staff has received two quotes for this work as follows: Lift Station #24: Piping and Panel Pump and Piping Quality Flow Systems, Inc. Braun Pump & Controls (KSB Pump) (ABS Pump) $34,346.25 $38,275.75 Another pump for Lift Station 24 is also having problems; however, staffwill try to keep this pump in service until next year when it is scheduled for replacement. Staffhad originally programmed to replace equipment at Lift Stations 7 and 9 for this year's lift station rehabilitation program. Funding for the replacement of the pump and piping at Lift Station 24 is proposed to come out ofthis project budget so staff may need to delay rehabilitation of one of the scheduled lift stations until next year.
