Who we are
Founded in 2004, The Community Foundation for Carver
County is a public charity created by and for the people
who live and work in Carver County. The Foundation
complements existing nonprofits by connecting emerging
community needs and interests with resources. It enables
people with philanthropic interests to easily and effec-
tively support the issues they care about.
All assets gifted to the Foundation remain in the region
to have a direct and lasting impact on Carver County for
generations to come.
Beyond the gifting of assets, the Foundation helps donors
identify issues of importance to them and inspires
engagement with organizations addressing those issues.
Our Vision for the Future
We bel ieve that the entire community th rives when its
citizens feel connected and enjoy a sense of belonging
and purpose.
As the region continues to grow and new needs emerge,
Carver County will be a vibrant, livable community with
a high quality of life for all ages, abilities and back-
grounds.
What is a community foundation?
A community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity
created by and for the people in a local area. It enables
people with philanthropic interests to easily and effec-
tively support the issues they care about - immediately
or through their will or estate plan.
Donors can give to an existing fund or establish a chari-
table fund by contributing a variety of assets to the
Foundation. Those assets are then carefully invested by
the Foundation.
Why choose The Community Foundation
for Carver Cou nty?
The Community Foundation for Carver County is
uniquely positioned to 'connect the dots' and make the
most of donor resources. The Foundation helps individu-
als, families and businesses achieve their charitable and
financial goals by providing tools and resources that
make giving easy, flexible and effective.
Sharing resources to help others is one of the most
rewarding things to do. Benefits to the community are as
varied as the individuals making charitable contributions,
and t~e opportunities to improve our collective quality of
life are endless.
A common thread is the desire to give something back
and to preserve our quality of life.

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR CARVER COUNTY
How Do I Create a Fund?
1. Decide When to Give
You can create your fund now, or establish it in your will, or through a trust arrangement that
benefits your family as well as charity. You may give in honor of an anniversary, to celebrate a
special event or to support a cause. Tax deductions are earned at the time of your gift, while
grants awarded from your fund will continue into the future.
2. Decide What to Give
Almost any kind of asset can be used to start your fund, such as cash, publicly traded securities,
closely held stock, interests in limited partnerships, real estate, life insurance, tangible personal
property, and private foundation assets. We can also discuss other options with you, such as
bequests, charitable remainder unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts, charitable lead
trusts, pooled income funds, charitable gift annuities, life-income and deferred charitable gift
annuities.
3. Choose the Name for Your Fund
Most of our funds are named for the donor or the donor's family, or as a memorial to someone
special. Every grant from the fund will carry this name. If you prefer anonymity you may choose a
name that reflects your fund's charitable purposes.
4. Choose a Type of Fund
We offer a variety of funds that are flexible to meet our donors' different charitable interests:
Unrestricted Funds offer the broadest
giving option, allowing dollars to be used
for grantmaking, operations and special
projects. This fund provides the most
flexibility in meeting the ever-changing
needs of our community.
Designated Funds let you support
specific organizations while we make
sure that grants to these groups remain
relevant over time and responsive to
changing circumstances.
Field-of-Interest Funds create grants
that support a targeted population, a
particular area of interest or a particular
geographic area.
Agency Funds are established by
nonprofit organizations to provide income
to them or as a pass-through fund. We
handle all administrative and investment
responsibilities, freeing the organization
to pursue its charitable mission.
Donor-Advised Funds allow donors to
actively participate in the grantmaking
process.
Operating Funds are used to address
the operational needs of the Foundation
itself, so that it can continue to run
effectively and be an asset to the
community in addressing needs now and
in the future.
Scholarship Funds allow donors to
invest in the community's future by
supporting student education. You may
define guidelines for candidacy, the
advisory committee, the school and the
award itself.

legacy that addresses the needs of today and the challenges of tomorrow, establishes a tradition

like all community foundations, we are
overseen by a volunteer board of leading
citizens and run by professionals with expertise
in knowing our community's needs. We go
beyond simply making grants that advance
charitable activities in our community: we also
identify current and emerging issues, we stimu-
late resources to address those needs, and we
help our community prepare for the future.
It's for these reasons that community
foundations represent one of the fastest
growing areas of philanthropy. The Community
