Girl Scout Gold Award
BACKGROUND
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest honor that a Girl Scout may earn. This
year, 128 girls from the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys
received their Gold Award. One of the recipients is Katherine (Katie) Pernula, a
Chanhassen resident.
To earn the Gold Award, the eligible Girl Scout in grades 10-12 must fulfill
requirements related to leadership, career exploration, and community service.
Each girl must spend at least 65 hours planning and implementing her project,
which will assess a need in the community and develops innovative ways to
address it, and she must work to put her plan into action.
For her project, Katie created a Bluff Creek Elementary Orientation Video. The
documentary video, in both English and Spanish, features school policies and
procedures, the English Language Learners program, and a virtual tour of the
school. The video will be used to make new families and Spanish-speaking
families more comfortable with the staff and school.
Katie Pernula will be presented with a certificate of recognition at the City
Council meeting.
