11. Public Gathering Permit, Water Skiing Tournament at Lake Susan Park 690 COULTER DRIVE. P.O. BOX 147. CHANHASSEN, MINNESOTA 55317 (612) 937-1900. FAX (612) 937-5739 CITY OF CHINHISSEN MEMORANDUM TO: Todd Hoffinan, Park and Recreation Director Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation Supervisor if j.il- April 24, 1997 FROM: DATE: SUBJ: Public Gathering Permit, Water Skiing Tournament at Lake Susan Park Mr. Steve Carlson, State Coordinator for the Minnesota International Novice Tour (INT) is requesting approval of a Public Gathering Permit to hold a water ski, wake-board and kneeboard tournament at Lake Susan Park on June 7 and 8. The INT is a non-profit company that promotes organized water-skiing, wakeboarding, and kneeboarding. The company started three years ago and currently has support in more than 25 states. If approved by the council, the tournament would host 50-60 participants. They would hold a practice session on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the actual tournament would be on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The INT plans on having 4 boats in the water with only one boat pulling a skier, wakeboarder, or a kneeboarder at a time. The remaining three boats would be on shore and used as safety boats. The slalom course would be set up 40-50 yards south of the sandy beach area, just west of the public access. The INT would also install a roll-in dock on the sandy beach area, which would serve as the area the skiers start from. Skiers would be staged in this area allowing tournament officials to conduct a safety check of the skier's equipment. If the INT would like to hold their tournament headquarters in the picnic pavilion at Lake Susan there would be a reservation fee of$250 per day. Use of electricity, bathrooms or other miscellaneous items would also require coordination. In order to proceed with their tournament, the INT must receive approval from the Chanhassen City Council. If the city council approves the permit, the INT is also required to seek approval of a temporary structure permit from Carver County to allow placement of a slalom course in a public water body. Mr. Carlson has been very cooperative in answering questions regarding the tournament and he will be attending the April 28 city council meeting to answer any questions the council may have. 11, -- 4n'D ",,"'" ": 1oI1IIIlftIoI1f11"..... 0rpI/1l11n A""'" '- Water Ski · Wakeboard · Kneeboard Amateur Tour February 26, 1997 Jerry Ruegemer Chanhassen Park & Rec 690 Coulter Drive Chanhassen, MN 55317 Dear Jerry: Thank you for the time you took the other day to talk about the INT League here in Minnesota with me. The INT league is non-profit organization working to create the best environment for novice water skiing and family fun as possible. Since the inception of the INT League three years ago it has grown from a handful of tournaments in washington state to a nation wide, well organized, well supported vehicle to bring the fun back into water skiing competition. with more than 25 states now supporting the tour it has received local, regional, and national media exposure as well as recognition from the U.S. Government as the only "LIttle League" of water skiing. with this recognition it has enabled the INT league to receive grants from the U.S. Government, SGMA (Sporting Goods Manufactures Association), WSIA (Water Sports Industry Association), and major sponsors. I have enclosed a informational packet on the "INT" International Novice Tournament. Please feel free to give us a cal with any questions you might have. Kneeboard Amateur Tour e International Water Sports Organization, is a non-profit Corporation. Developed with the sole purpose to start a rassroots "Little League" program for waterskiing wakeboarding and kneeboarding. The Water Sport Industry Association (WSIA), representing the majority of water sports manufactures along with the Sporting Goods Manufactures Association (SGMA), is joining with us in this project. Together we have created the "INT League." The "INT League" is considered the largest promotional undertaking in Water Ski history. Our program is targeted to interest twelve (12) million water skiers and a growing number of wake boarders in the United States. We have created a marketing opportunity that is the talk of the water sports industry. Please allow us a few minutes to tell you about this exciting promotional opportunity. Over the past nine years we have been producing novice waterski & wakeboard events in Washington state. This became so popular that in 1994 we expanded to an eight (8) stop tour concept. With divisions for all ages and abilities we had over 1200 competitors. In 1996 we expanded this idea into 11 states with approximately 150 event days. Our 1997 plans include expansion into fifteen to twenty states across America. Our continuing goal is to expose this fun program to approximately 12,000 skiing enthusiasts and to make over 150,000 impressions. The design of the INT League program is to give you, the local dealers an opportunity to spend a day or a weekend with the end user, the Skiers. We consider our program to be like a weekend family picnic where dealers can build relationships with the local participants'. As a local dealer we encourage you to demo skis, wakeboards and kneeboards, give coaching tips, even take participants on test drives! National sponsorship allows you as local dealers to become involved with this community event. When we use the term novice, we mean most of our participants are competing for the first time, and become hooked! As the INT League develops in your state you will find about 60% are new to the idea of competition. While the other 40% try it once and continue to follow the INT league. Both of these groups are valuable consumers, the skier that follows the league will continue to want new product as his ability grows. The first time participants will have the opportunity to see the latest products the industry has to offer, along with demonstrating a new wakeboard, kneeboard, or even the new wide ride ski. We are generating an opportunity for entry level skiers to challenge their abilities, while giving families a new summer activity. This increases enthusiasm and excitement, which creates sales for companies like yours. With the driving force of the Water Sports Industry Association and your company sponsorship donation, this program will reach out to create a high level of continued excitement. This program will retain these participants' and committed customers' interest in skiing as a sport for long term growth. Your donation will enable us to bring this grassroots program to more families through out the United States. We would appreciate a moment of your time to look through our sponsorship guide. Enclosed you will find an outline of our sponsorship levels and order form. Please mail or fax your order form to our office and we will invoice you. Due to print deadlines, your immediate response is appreciated. Thank you for your consideration.
