PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
OCTOBER 9,1997
PRESENT:

Dr. Robert Welch, Darel Radde, Paramedic Director, Ridgeview Medical Center, Steve
Grand, Coordinator for Southwest Metro Drug Task Force
Chairperson Labatt opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m.
Commissioner Bemhjelm motioned, Commissioner Sloss seconded, to approve the August 14, 1997
minutes as written. All voted in favor and the motion passed.
GUEST PRESENTATION:
Steve Grand, Coordinator for Southwest Metro Drug Task Force gave a presentation on how the group
was founded and its mission of enforcing drug laws, as well as discussing trends and activity.
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Scott Harr stated that a letter had been sent to Jim McMahon, the Fire Chief, requesting representation at
the PSC meetings. Scott Harr also reported on the house fire on Horseshoe Curve. He also stated that
the week of October 5-11, 1997, was National Fire Prevention Week and that the Chanhassen Fire
Department was having its Open House on Sunday, October 12, 1997.
SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT:
Scott Harr reported on the jail break at the Carver County jail.
Commissioner Dockendorf asked for thoughts on the Sheriff s Advisory Report. Discussion was held.
INSPECTIONS DIVISION:
Scott Harr stated that permit revenues were down and that permit fees were recommended to be
increased by the Council.
PUBLIC SAFETY EDUCATION/CRIME PREVENTION:
Scott Harr stated that Beth Hoiseth was working on neighborhood watches and had recently attended a
seminar in Eden Prairie on "Work Place Violence".

NEW BUSINESS:
Scott Harr stated that the Animal Control Contract with other cities would be finished as of 12/31/97.
Scott Harr updated the commission on the Hwy 5 traffic safety project. There is a positive response from
other agencies. Notes have been printed on water bills; the newspaper has done articles; Southwest
Metro has offered to put messages on the buses; and the State Patrol will assist. Creative efforts
continue.
GUEST PRESENTATION:
Dr. Robert Welch gave a presentation on Team C.R.A.S.H. (Community Response to Accidents for Safer
Highways). Carver County is one of 10 national sites.
Steve Labatt thanked Scott Harr and his staff for phone calls to the Public Safety Commission members
advising them of the Carver County jail break and other related events.
Commissioner Sloss motioned, Commissioner Bernhjelm seconded to adjourn the meeting. All voted
and the motion passed.
