2009 Environmental Excellence Awards
fJ~'
The Environmental Excellence Awards are presented by the City of Chanhassen to
recognize environmental improvements and stewardship throughout the community.
These awards are designed not only to recognize achievement, but also to
communicate new ideas and encourage the members of the Chanhassen community to
make a difference in their world.
Greg and Colleen Fletcher
Project: Permeable paver driveway
Living near Lotus Lake has given Greg and Colleen an appreciation of the importance of
water quality. When they decided it was time to replace their driveway, they explored
their options and found that the most appealing surface was also environmentally
beneficial to the lake they love. The permeable paver surface they chose allows
rainwater to infiltrate the ground on site and significantly reduces the amount of runoff
going into the storm sewers and lake. Their driveway shows that environmentally
friendly home improvement options can serve many needs - aesthetics, property
values, and stewardship. Congratulations to Greg and Colleen.
St. Hubert Church and School
Project: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle programs in church and school
This year, St. Hubert Church and School decided to do things a little differently. Instead
of going with the status quo they made environmental changes throughout their
buildings. Some of the changes were small, some big, but they all added up to a
significant difference in the church and school's environmental impact. They
discontinued using Styrofoam cups and now use donated coffee mugs. In the
classrooms no paper towels are used and instead rags and natural cleaners are put to
work. In hallways and rooms, there is a greater quantity of recycling bins to ensure
easy access to them. They switched all of the lighting to environmentally-friendly
products and only use green cleaning solutions in the buildings. With the success and
accomplishments of this year, the school now plans on forming a student 'Green Team'
next year as well as composting their organic waste in the cafeteria. Congratulations to
St. Hubert Church and School.
