EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On November 24,2009, the Park & Recreation Commission reviewed the
nominations for Park & Recreation Volunteer Service Awards. Attached is the
staff report to the Commission that describes the awards and nominees in detail.
In addition to the submitted nominees, the Park & Recreation Commission
identified the Chanhassen Lions Club as a deserving organization in the
Community Groups category for their contributions to the city in 2009. The
Commission also felt that both nominees in the District 276 & 112 School
Group category receive awards because they both participated in the same
activity and performed the same volunteer tasks.

RECOMMENDA TION
The Park & Recreation Commission unanimously recommends that the City
Council present the following Park & Recreation Volunteer Service Awards:
Resident Group Nominees: Juggbros-Brett & Blake Szalapski
The Juggbros are brothers whose main focus is teaching kids how to juggle and
entertain crowds of people. During the past year, the Juggbros voluntarily
taught classes to children and performed at the Summer Discovery Playground
Program, the Penny Carnival, the Fourth of July Celebration, and the Senior
Center picnic. Their performances have been enjoyed by a large number of our
residents and staff appreciates the ability to use local performers in our
recreation program offerings.
Business Group Nominee: The Mustard Seed Landscaping & Garden
Center
The Mustard Seed Landscaping & Garden Center has been a Gold Sponsor of
our annual community special events for the past four years. Not only has The
Mustard Seed contributed financially, but they have volunteered their time and
resources to other community events. They donate and coordinate Santa Claus,
his head elf, and a real live reindeer for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. They also
are active in the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce and have volunteered
at the Fourth of July Celebration and the Home & Garden Expo. Additionally,
they are involved with various projects with St. Hubert's Catholic Community,
Eastern Carver County School District 112, and many other service projects.
Community Groups and Organizations: The Chanhassen Lions Club
The Chanhassen Lions Club was chartered in 1988 and since then has been
involved in many community activities. Most recently, the club volunteered for
the annual Halloween Party (which they have done for several years); but has
also focused a lot of their attention to the Chanhassen Senior Center. They
contributed financially to the 15th Anniversary calendars, the Senior Center
community open house, and has sponsored their annual picnic for the past five
years. In 2009, 125 seniors participated in the annual picnic. Their involvement
in the picnic includes set-up, purchase and cook the food, and arrange for
entertainment. The Lions Club has had a long history of being involved in the
Chanhassen community and the city is appreciative of their service.

Groups Representing Schools in Districts 276 & 112 Nominees: Greg
Drewiske and Danny Hatton
Greg Drewiske is a junior at Chanhassen High School and Danny Hatton is a
senior at Chaska High School. During this past year, both provided instructional
support for a Chanhassen Park & Recreation Youth Football program. The
program was for children in grades 1-3 and ran for five weeks. Both young men
provided instruction on football skills that will improve participant's knowledge
of the game. Our department certainly has benefitted from utilizing talented
community members to assist with our programs.
If approved by the City Council, the awards will be distributed at their
January 11,2010 meeting.

Park and Rec Commission Meeting - November 24,2009
Wendt: No.
Daniel: Alright. Well should we make a motion to approve the fees staying flat for 201O?
Stolar: So moved.
Scharfenberg: Second.
Stolar moved, Scharfenberg seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission
recommend that the City Council adopt the 2010 group picnic reservation fees at the same
level as 2009. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to O.
REVIEW NOMINEES FOR PARK AND RECREATION SERVICE A WARDS AND
MAKE RECOMMENDATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL.
Ruegemer: Thanks again Chair Daniels. This is the first opportunity for the commission to take
a look at the new program that we did implement last December as you all probably remember in
our Park and Rec Commission meeting. This is our first year of going through the volunteer,
park and rec volunteer service award program. For this year we did try to advertise it a lot of
different places. Through the Chanhassen Connection, our web site, press releases, the
electronic menu board down on the comer of 78th and Kerber Boulevard so we really tried to get
the information out there. It's been on the city web page for oh probably 6-7 months, that sort of
thing here trying to get that word out. We did break the service awards down into 4 different
categories. The category A is the resident group. B is business. C is community groups and
organizations and D is the groups representing schools in Districts 276 and 112. So the, we did
have a total this year of 4 applications that were received. What we had one in the resident group
area. One in the business. We did not have any in the community groups and organizations and
then two in the groups representing School Districts 276 and 112. Briefly going through the
resident group we did have the Juggbros, Brett and Blake Szalapski. They are really nice pair of
young men. Obviously they are brothers. They have volunteered at a number of different events
and programs that we've had throughout the city in 2009. The Summer Discovery Playground
program, Penny Carnival, the Fourth of July. They were an entertainment out at Sue's senior
center picnic at Lake Ann Park so they really participated in a, kind of a number of different
programs that we have throughout Chanhassen in 2009 so staff appreciates having them. They
always do it for free and volunteer their time to kind of give back to the community so really a
pair of nice young men. Briefly with the business group nominee. That is the Mustard Seed
Landscaping and Garden Center. They've been a gold sponsor of our's for our annual
sponsorship program for the last 4 years. They donate annually $1,000 for their annual
sponsorship. This year Mark did bump it up to $1,200 for their sponsorship for 2010. Mark has
been involved in a number of different areas with the city, and not only volunteering their time
but, in financial contributions. As a lot of you have been to the tree lighting ceremony coming
up here next week, week and a half, Mark is the elf. Mark coordinates the Santa Claus is one of
Mark's employees. Cory is Santa Claus. He dresses up every night. Or every year. Mark is in
the elf suit and he brings up the live reindeer so Mark does all that. Donates all that. You know
the talent and the reindeer and all that sort of stuff to that event so it's a real nice thing that the
city doesn't have to pay for any of that stuff. Just kind of add to the overall event itself. Mark's
15
Park and Rec Commission Meeting - November 24, 2009
also involved with the Southwest Area Chamber. You know kind of separate from the City.
Been past president. Been very involved with that. With the Fourth of July trade, business trade
and expo. The Home and Garden Expo as well as coming up next year at the rec center. He's
also done you know a number of other different community types of events and projects within
Carver County or with the school district so. The other two, the category D we had two
individuals, two students from, they're both from Chaska High School last year but now they
kind of separated out with the new split. Greg Drewiske now is at the new Chanhassen High
School and Danny Hatton is at, he continued to stay at the Chaska High School. During the
spring of 2009 when they both were students at Chaska High School they performed and
volunteered time for a youth football program that we had out at the Chanhassen Recreation
Center so they volunteered their time to help kind of coordinate or provide supervision for the
football program. That certainly benefitted our department having another set of hands so to
speak to help out with the coordination of that. You know kind of bring our staff ratios down
and with volunteering of their time we didn't have to payout any money for additional staff. So
they were really a pleasure to work with and certainly benefitted our department as well. So at
this point staff's going to recommend that the commission review the applications, which I'm
sure you have already. Make a recommendation to the City Council as to who should receive the
park and rec service awards. And just a reminder, going forward tonight I think we're going to, I
know we don't have that many nominations here but, and applications but we're going to try to
have one award per category.
Daniel: Moving forward beyond this year?
Hoffman: Yep.
Daniel: So this year we're just going to choose one?
Hoffman: No. You can choose all three I would recommend. One in each category but in the
future when it's multiple nominations.
Daniel: Per category.
Hoffman: One per category.
Daniel: Okay, gotch ya.
Kelly: So those two high school kids are a single nomination?
Ruegemer: Yes.
Kelly: Okay.
Daniel: So we're not going to vote against each other.
16
Park and Rec Commission Meeting - November 24, 2009
Stolar: For community groups and organizations, there were no nominees. Like tonight we just
heard about what the Lions Club does for the senior center. Do we have choices to add or would
you rather not do that in this process?
Ruegemer: You know in reviewing, staff certainly had conversation of that. We really wanted
to get the program to, out into the community and really have kind of a community based
nomination process. More so than staff kind of going out and hand.
Hoffman: That doesn't preclude them from nominating.
Ruegemer: Yeah but.
Stolar: I was out, when did we go to the senior thing? We went to the senior thing once about 4
years ago we want to it as a commission, or you promoted it here and I know I went to that and
they do do a lot of work out there for that. They used to do the event as they have this year, the
last couple years but they've done quite a bit... But I don't want to rush into anything but it does
seem like.
Hoffman: I don't think you're rushing in.
Smith: I think it's a good idea. I would, I mean I would make a motion that we would accept
staff's recommendation, or that we would nominate the three entries here as well as add an entry
in the group as far as the Lions as pertaining to their involvement with the senior center.
Wendt: I'll second that.
Smith moved, Wendt seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission recommend the
City Council award the Park and Recreation Service A wards to the following nominees:
Resident Group: Juggbros - Brett and Blake Szalapski
Business Group: The Mustard Seed Landscaping and Garden Center
Community Groups and Organizations: Chanhassen Lions Club
Groups Representing Schools in Districts 276 and 112: Greg Drewiske and Danny Hatton
All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to O.
Daniel: We'll just say that certainly we include this for the meeting. I mean it's really amazing
what some of these young kids are doing.
Hoffman: We heard of a couple more tonight. The bingo callers.
Daniel: Absolutely.
Hoffman: For years.
17
Park and Rec Commission Meeting - November 24, 2009
Daniel: It really is. I mean they're just unique. It's a different way to draw and contribute to the
community and certainly they're all well deserving of an acknowledge of the~r efforts and
serVIce.
Hoffman: December the council will review the nominees and then in January they'll make their
awards and we'll let you know when that's going on at the council meeting.
Daniel: Is that something that the Park and Rec Commission should be, as well as the staff, be
present for?
Hoffman: Sure. Not, you don't all have to be there but if you're represented as some of your
members, that would be great.
Daniel: Okay, great and you'll let us know when that will be.
Hoffman: I will.
Daniel: Great, thanks Todd.
RECREA TION PROGRAM REPORTS:
2009 HALLOWEEN PARTY EV ALVA TION.
Ruegemer: I know we had a chance to discuss the Halloween Party kind of at our October
meeting here but didn't have the evaluation prepared yet at that point. It seems like that was
quite a while ago at this point but thanks again for everybody for being there. We did have
approximately 500 people with children, parents and family members out there for that. We had
a pretty nice night. It was a little bit wet out in the area but we had to make some adjustments
with the hay rides and that sort of thing which worked out just fine with that. We had a number
of different groups in the gym areas and with different games and face painters and that sort of
thing, that worked out really good. Got some new entertainment this year. The Mixed Nuts.
They were kind of a comedy duo that kind of went through their skits and their performances
within the gym area so that, by the looks of it the kids were enjoying it with the laughter that was
going on inside the gym so that was a nice event. Kept the refreshments to the rooms 3 and 4.
Fred and Judy Prince have been volunteering for that for a number of years as well so they're
kind of our official cookie ambassadors on the Halloween night so we certainly appreciate all
their efforts for that so. I think they enjoy seeing all the kids in their costumes as well and it kind
of, watching that area within those rooms so we had a great volunteers again from Holy Family
High School, Chanhassen High School Key Club as well as the park and rec commissioners, city
staff and that sort of thing too so we had a great, just after the event, this was probably the
quickest that we ever you know disassembled everything and had everything boxed up in less
than an hour after the event was over with so we were out of there by 8:30 which is an all time
record. So we had great help. Great students. Great staff that was there and we organized
everything and put it down and swept everything out and shut the doors by 8:30 so thanks again
for all you that helped out with that so. Just a number of different general comments. You know
we're going to certainly try to keep the entertainment fresh and rotate that on an annual basis or

Greetings from the Juggbros!
Teaching Life Lessons Through Juggling
We would like to start off by thanking you profusely for your
generous donation to the Angel Foundation as part of our Joggling-Run-
Walk race held at Lake Harriet on August 22, 2009. The event was a
success thanks to your support.
The event took place on a beautiful summer day; the weather
could not have been more perfect. The sun shone brightly, the
temperature hovered around 80, anda gentle breeze blew off the lake.
The day began with some · tl, '
event-promotion, with Bloke
juggling clubs and torches
and ridinghisfive.;.foot
unicycle, while Brett
performed numerous tricks
such as five balls and, of
course, his favorite, Mill's
Mess-always a delight to
onlookers. The race got
underway shortly after 12
noon, with the Blake cross-
country team leading the
way. Brett joggled the race of, course, while the rest of us walked or ran
the beautiful three miles. We handed out many fliers with details on the
Angel Foundation and Juggbros, and our new, snazzy black Juggbros
t-shirts attracted quite a bit of attention as well. At the end of the three
miles, everyone felt great knowing they had run for a great cause!
As.mentioned previously, all proceeds are benefitting the Angel
Foundation. The foundation, established in 2001, is a MN based charitable
organization that works to meet the non-medical needs of adult cancer
patients and their families. While many foundations raise money for
research, the Angel Foundation focuses specifically on day-to-day needs,
including financial and education support. At one Angel Foundation
event for children affected by cancer, Kids Kemp, the Juggbros taught
the children how to juggle, giving them a great way to take their minds off
the stresses they face in everyday life. To learn more about either
Juggbros or the Angel Foundation, visit their websites at:

Synopsis of SegmentlWhat are your goals for the interview?:
The goals of the interview are to share with a wide audience Juggbros variety of
skills of juggling to encourage venues who have children who might be in need of
a focus, outlet, exercise, active participation, competency to solicit their
volunteer abilities.
Juggbros. would also like to encourage participation in their joggling fundraiser
(running while joggling) around lake . Harriet on 8122 at noon - walke.rsand
runners are encouraged as well or donations or pledges so that they can achieve
their goal of $1 ,000 tocorrtribute to the Angel Foundation. Juggbros. has taught
juggling at Angel Foundation's Kids Kamp this summer.
The Angel Foundation is dedicated to their mission of improving the quality of life
throughout the cancer experience and works to fulfill unmet non-medicalneeds
of cancer patients and their families, including financial assistance and
educational programs and other acts of kindness. Our sister, President of
Operation Snuggles provided hundreds of fleece hats for chemotherapy patients.
Talking Ppints/Questions:
1. Who are the Juggbros?
We are Brett and Blake Szalapski, two brothers performing community service
through teaching and performing of juggling.
2. How did you get the idea?
Beginning with Blake, juggling became a family affair after he took some lessons
with Paul at Jugheads. Paul was instrumental in encouraging Brett to move on
from basic juggling to multiples and a variety of objects including rings, torches,
machetes. We began teaching hockey families and their moms, friends, started a
juggling club at school and decided it would be a great idea to teach children
whose life situations may not allow them individual lessons.
3. What are your goals?
We teach juggling mainly to kids going through stressful times, for instance we
teach at Tubman Family Alliance a shelter for families experiencing domestic
violence and Angel Foundation Kids Kamp, a summer camp for children whose
families are going through someone with cancer. Juggling provides focus, a
feeling of mastery, exercise, a group contribution and also helps with math b/c of
aU of the variety of patterns.
What are your cUfrentprojects? Our next event is our joggling race. This is
running while juggling around lake Harriet on Sat. 8/22 at noon. The race is open
to walkers and runners and we are really hoping for contributions and pledges to
reach ourgaal of at least $1 ,000 to give to the Angel Foundation, our most recent
teaching venue.
4. What has been the mostr~warding experience thus far?
One sunny day in the City of Minneapolis last summer, we walked into the
Tubman Family AlUancePeace Camp and were overwhelmed by the kids
enthusiastically chanting: "The jugglers are here, the jugglers are here" ,followed
by usually rowdy children sitting attentively waiting fOTtheir juggling baits.
5. What do you hope to do in the future?
We hope to continue to teach people how to juggle as an overarching goal, but
also plan to increase the scope of nonteaching events to raise money for our
particular causes. We also are looking for funds to purchase juggling balls for
the children we teach so .theycan bring them home to practice.
6. Wh,t are your favorite juggling tricks?
Audiences are usually really impressed when we pass 6f1amingtol'ches and 6
machetes back and forth. Quantities of objects are probably Brett's favorite as in
6-7 balls being flashed up in the air.
7. What to you hope to do in the future?
We hope to continue to teach juggling to individuals, especially children, in
difficult situations how to juggle while increasing fund raising exposure in a
variety of venues.
8. How can people find you?
9.
We can been reached at http://juaabros.com or

Demo/Props Description: Juggling balls, rings, clubs, torches, machetes
Do you have video or images available to use during segment and on what format
(DVD, Beta, DVCam)?:
We have a Juggbros. banner and a large - 18x24 flyer of the joggling race
coming up on 8/22.
Information to air at end of segment (Website, Event Promotion):
The enlarged flyers should be a great item and/or the 1st page of the website:
http://iuaabros.com
We also could send you the logo in aPDF format as well as the registration form
in a PDF.
Paragraph for the ShowcaseMinnesota.com website:
~}
We are two teenagers who have developed skills juggling 6-7 objects, including
balls, rings, clubs, machetes and torches. We voluntarily teach juggling
generally to kids in stressful situations who need assistance with focusing,
mastery, to help build confidence and character so that they are set apart and feel
good and strong about themselves. He hope to continue our fundraisingactivities
to include other worthwhile causes, but currently are kindly requesting
donations, contributions and pledges for our joggling race to take place on
8/22/09 at Lake Harriet at noon. All of the funds raised will benefit the Angel
Foundation.
Ifor tbeSllowcaseMinnesota.com website paragraph, please use this instead of the
previously sent paragr:aph that was inCluded with the segment information.
We are Brett and Blake Szalapski, .Juggbros., two teenage jugglers who teach
kids bow to juggle aftef' having acquired tbe skin ourselves over the past six years.
We especially focus on reaching out to kids who are going through stressful times.
Juggling is a sport, an art, or a bobby, but no matter bow intense a juggler is, it is an
excellent distraction from the troubles of life. In addition -to tea'ching people how to
juggle, we have done some small performances for senior citizens and younger
children. We juggle everything from balls to torches and machetes-even the
occasional cell phone. Find out more about Juggbros or how to contact us at

RE: Juggbros
W ouId you be willing to change the mention of SEED Camp to, "SEED Camp, a youth development program offered by
Project for Pride in Living, wV'!Yv.ppl-iI1G.Qrg ."
Our programs are not Mpls. Public Schools programs, but we are a community partner of the Mpls. School district.
At Project for Pride in Living our mission is to work with Iower.income individuals and families to achieve greater self.
sufficiency through housing, employment training, support services, and education. Our work is guided by a commitment
to providing a process for skill-building and a support system for achieving:
. Housing Stability
. Economic Advancement'
. Family stability
. Youth Achievement
PPL promises connections to reliable relationships and life-changing opportunities.
At our Summer Educational Enrichment Day Camp (SEED Camp) we provide venues for youth to meet their basic needs.
The work Juggbros did here provided supports and opportunities for the youth to meet these needs:
. Feel a sense of safety and structure.
Brett and Blake facilitated their class in a very nurturing manner. The kids felt safe taking the risk of trying
to juggle. Brett and Blake structured the class to promote learning.
. Experience active participation, group membership, and belonging.
The whole class was all about active participation. And they each definitely identified themselves as a
member of the juggling group.
. Develop self-worth through meaningful contribution.
As they put on their juggling exhibition for the whole camp it was obvious they knew they were adding
value to the entire SEED Camp experience for everyone.
. Experiment to discover self, gain independence, and gain control over one's life.
None of the kids in the class knew they could actually juggle three objects. They found out they were
capa15le.
. Develop significant quality relationships with peers and adults.
It was obvious the kids connected with Brett and Blake right away. And as they struggled to learn how to
juggle they supported and encouraged each other.
. Feel pride of competence and mastery.
Anyone who was paying attention at all saw pride in their faces as they performed in front of their peers.
. Expand their capacity to enjoy life and know that success is possible.
Our desire over the years in SEED Camp is to see kids walking out of here with an air about them that
conveys, "I can do stuff!!!" Each member of the juggling class felt successful. It was most evident to me
during those times when I stopped in to see how the class was going and kids were coming up to me saying,
"Mr. Maurie, watch this!" and they would enthusiastically and confidently (never mind how haltingly) begin
to juggle. .

s I watched the kids perform, deep do~ inside I responded with a huge "YES! 't This is why we do this SEED
Camp program. - This is why I've been doing this program for over 20 years.
I do indeed hope we can schedule the Juggbros to teach juggling again next summer.

The Mustard Seed Landscaping & Garden Center
Volunteering Description: Although the Mustard Seed is no longer located
within the city limits of Chanhassen, we have still remained very active within the
community. Some of our ongoing involvement and support within the
Chanhassen community is as follows:
1. We have been a Gold Sponsor of the "Chanhassen Marque Community
Events" since we opened our Garden Center 4 years ago.
2. We donate Santa, his Head Elf, and his favorite Reindeer at the Annual
Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony each year.
3. Through the SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce, we have been a
part of the core group that founded and continues the "Southwest Metro's
Home and Garden Expo" that has been held at Chapel Hill Academy in
Chanhassen.
4. We provided and planted a tree to the 2009 State of Minnesota winner of
the National Arbor Day Poster Contest, Hugh Truempi, of St Hubert's
School in Chanhassen.
5. We visit District 112's Kindergarten Center each year with our Reindeer to
kick off the Christmas Season
6. We landscaped the front of the Kindergarten Center at a greatly reduced
price (approximately our cost) to make it more inviting, reduce
maintenance and conserve water.
7. We have "adopted" a 2 mile portion of Hwy. 212 between Hwy 101 and
Lyman Blvd. This year we spent 36 man hours cleaning this section of
roadway in Chanhassen and collected over 12 ton of garbage!
8. We provide free recycling of plastic pots to all residents of our community.
9. We have volunteered at the Annual 4th of July Festival through the
SouthWest Metro Chamber of Commerce.
10. We provide free Field Trips to area schools and churches where children
learn earth science and principles of good stewardship of our natural
resources. You can view a Field trip at this link:
