WS 2010 01 11 CHANHASSEN CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION JANUARY 11, 2010 Mayor Furlong called the work session to order at 6:00 p.m. COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: Mayor Furlong, Councilman Litsey, Councilwoman Ernst, Councilwoman Tjornhom, and Councilman McDonald STAFF PRESENT: Todd Gerhardt, Laurie Hokkanen, Kate Aanenson, Paul Oehme, and Todd Hoffman DISCUSS 2010 KEY FINANCIAL STRATEGIES. Todd Gerhardt reviewed the individual key financial strategies discussed at the meeting on th Saturday, January 9. Mayor Furlong asked about further discussion of the City’s technology policy. Todd Gerhardt asked for direction on a timeline to discuss the pavement management plan and assessment policy on a future agenda. Councilwoman Tjornhom stated she would like to know what other communities are doing to adjust their policies. Councilman Litsey asked if there was enough staff to handle the number of projects being proposed for the year. Todd Gerhardt stated he did not see any problems with addressing all the items. He stated Laurie Hokkanen would email the final list to council members and asked that the lists be returned to thth staff by January 19 in time for the January 25 meeting. UPDATE ON YEAR END BUILDING ACTIVITY AND DEMOGRAPHICS. Kate Aanenson presented an update on the year end statistics for building permits noting that residential permit numbers were better than the previous year. She reviewed the upcoming construction projects for 2010 and clarified the relationship between inspections and permit revenue. Regarding demographics, currently the city’s population is around 25,000 with a projected buildout population projected at 35,000. Mayor Furlong asked what is being done to address the staged advancement of utilities to handle development when it happens. Kate Aanenson discussed how the Metropolitan Council will have to adjust their projected population numbers to correlate to actual numbers. Todd Gerhardt assured the council that with the year end numbers for 2009 and the projected 2010 budget, the City will be okay in the coming year.
