Rick Rice - 2nd Assistant Chief ,/

DATE: May 13, 2010
SUBJ: Monthly City Council Update
Fire Department Overview:
Staffing is at 39 active firefighters and three probationary firefighters as of May 11, 2010. There
two firefighters on leave. Current allocation is 45 PTE's.
Year to date there have been 203 calls for service. There were 40 calls in April, and as of May
11 we have responded to 11 calls.
There were no commercial or residential structure fires since the last report.
Training: Training for May is scheduled to be Mayday training on May 10 and air bag/hybrid
training on May 17
Fire Marshal:
Fire Prevention: Preliminary plans are under way for summer safety camp, National Night Out,
4th of July activities, day care center fire truck visits, and numerous block parties. It appears to
be a busy and fun filled summer for Fire Department members. Now is the time of year for our
firefighters to get out into the neighborhoods, meet our residents, and let the kids climb on the
big red trucks.
Fire Investigations: There were no fires to report on since our last update. It's been pretty
quiet, which is great.
Fire Inspections: We are continuing with inspections of existing buildings. A number of
buildings in the lower Y -area were inspected in the past week. Just a few fire code violations
were noted, and quickly taken care of. Inspections are also taking place for businesses that want
to sell consumer fireworks. These businesses are required to apply for a permit through the Fire
Department. Part of the process in obtaining a permit is that a fire inspection of the building
takes place. As of today, Cub Foods and Target are the only ones who have applied for a permit.
A number of years ago we did have a company that sold fireworks in the parking lot at the
Shopping Center at 7 and 41, but we have not heard from them since then. Other projects that are
at various stage of construction, or completion, are Westwood Church addition, Autobahn
Motorplex tenant finishes, Westwood Sports, Ferguson Plumbing, Haskell's Liquors, K.
Hovnanian Homes, Apex International, and the Target store remodel.
