Re: Support of Funding for US Highway 212 Carver City Link through the TIGER II
Program Project No. 03 -09
Dear Senator Klobuchar:
Thank you for your support of needed investments to improve the safety of US Highway 212. We
greatly appreciate the inclusion of $400,000 in the Senate version of the FY2011 Transportation
and Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations bill to assist with ongoing work to
improve the safety of this critical National Highway System corridor. This funding will build on
previous federal investments that have allowed us to make progress toward the ultimate goal of a
continuous four -lane connection between Chaska and Norwood -Young America.
Carver County has also submitted an application for $2.4 million in planning dollars for the US
212 Carver City Link through the TIGER II program. This project includes improvements to US
Highway 212 as part of larger development projects and additional transit and trail amenities.
Your continued support of the TIGER II application is greatly appreciated.
Federal transportation funds provide nearly half of the dollars invested in Minnesota's
infrastructure annually; an investment that is critical to job creation and economic development in
the state. As you know, a new multi -year surface transportation authorization act is nearly one
year overdue. While funding from the general fund has kept the transportation program going,
deficit spending is clearly not a sustainable strategy for maintaining our nation's public
infrastructure. Without additional revenue, we are facing a 30 -50 percent cut in the federal
program.
Please tell your party leadership to make passage of the overdue, multi -year transportation
bill a top priority.
With continued growth and development, the demands on our infrastructure are growing. The
safety issues are very real and additional traffic on this highway will compound the problems. We
need additional funding in order to continue to make progress in improving US Highway 212,
Trunk Highway 5 and other critical transportation facilities. A new transportation authorization
act will provide the stability needed for multi -year planning as well as the new policies needed to
address the transportation challenges we face in a rapidly changing world.
Thank you for your consideration of this request. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
CITY OF CHANHASSEN
