MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and City Council l
FROM: Don Ashworth, City Manager f
DATE: January 4, 1996
SUBJ: Set Date for Board of Equalization and Review, April 7, May 12 & 27
In the spring of each year, the city council acts as the Board of Equalization and Review to
review citizen concerns regarding property valuations. Typically three dates are set to complete
the process and the Carver County Assessor suggests the following:
• Monday, April 7: The County Assessor discusses the process with citizens present and
invites them to fill out an appeal form. This meeting is not a regular city council meeting.
• Monday, May(Regular Meeting): The County Assessor informs the council of the
number of appeals received and that all appeals must be filed by this date. There may be
citizens present who want to speak to the council about their valuations. Following this the
council directs the County Assessor to prepare a response to each property owner who filed
an appeal and report back in two weeks.
• Tuesday, May 27 (Regular Meeting): The city council acts on the recommendations made
by the County Assessor.
I would like to invite Orlin Schafer, Carver County Assessor to an upcoming work session to
review this process with the city council.
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend that the meeting dates for the Board of Equalization and Review be set at April 7,
May 12, and May 27, 1997.
