Excelsior, MN 5533 TO: Todd Gerhardt, City Manager FROM: Roger Smallbeck - Fire Chief Ed Coppersmith - 1 st Assistant Chief Rick Rice - 2 nd Assistant Chief Mark Littfin - Fire Marshal ` J DATE: January 13, 2011 SUBJ: Monthly City Council Update Fire Department Overview: Staffing is at 43 active firefighters and four probationary firefighters as of January 13, 2011. There is one firefighter on leave. Current allocation is 45 PTE's. Year to date there have been 16 calls for service. There were 55 calls in December, and as of January 13 we have responded to 16 calls. There has been one residential structure fire in January. On January 9 th at 2034 hours the fire department was dispatched to a house fire on Mohawk Drive. On arrival we found a content fire in a bedroom on the second floor. The fire was quickly extinguished but the house sustained significant heat, smoke, and water damage. Eden Prairie Fire Department provided mutual aid stand -by coverage while we were on the scene at the fire. All units cleared the scene at 2228. Training: Training for January will be radio communications, and a CPR and EMT refresher. Fire Marshal Fire Prevention: There is nothing new to report on at this time. Fire Investigations: There were a couple of fires to report on. On Sunday, January 9 1h at 8:30 pm, a report of a house fire at 6711 Mohawk Drive in the Carver Beach area was received. The first arriving crews discovered a fire in an upstairs bedroom. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters with no injuries reported. The residents had left the house for a short period and upon returning discovered the fire and called 911. Chanhassen had 40 firefighters respond and also requested a crew from Eden Prairie to stand by at Station # 1 to provide coverage for the City. The fire is under investigation at this time. The fire department also responded to a large dumpster fire on Tuesday, January 11 at 7:08 pm. The dumpster was in proximity to a townhouse under construction. The fire did not cause any damage. It is unknown at this time as to what caused the fire. Fire Inspections: There are projects at various stages of completion. Digital Cyclone, K.Hovnanian Townhomes, Fitness Revolution, Fitness Together, State Farm Insurance, Autobahn Motorplex, Exlar, and a few other smaller remodel projects. We are also conducting inspections in all hotels, motels, apartment buildings, medical clinics, churches, and office industrial buildings along Lake Drive West.
