PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
JUNE 12, 1997
PRESENT: Colleen Dockendorf, Bill Bernhjelm, Bill Wyffels, Brian Beniek, Greg Weber
ABSENT: Steve Labatt, Jim Sloss

PRESENT: Scott Harr, Public Safety Director; Bob Zydowsky, Deputy Public Safety Director; Steve
Kirchman, Building Official; Mark Littfin; Fire Marshal; Greg Hayes, Fire Inspector
GUESTS:
Chairperson Labatt and alternate Chairperson Sloss were absent.
Commissioner Beniek opened the meeting.
Commissioner Weber motioned, Commissioner Wyffels seconded, to approve the May 8, 1997 minutes
as written. All voted in favor and the motion passed.
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Inspector, Greg Hayes, was introduced to the Commission, and explained his job and the positive
direction it continues to take.
Greg Hayes talked about the "Certificate of Award" program they have started for businesses in
Chanhassen. Fire inspections are being done on all businesses. The award will be given to those who
excel in fire and industrial safety. A presentation will be made and a notice will appear in the paper.
Redmond Products will be the first recipient of this award.
Mark Littfin reported on the sprinkling ban (odd, even days) in Chanhassen. He has been driving around
and talking to people who are hot abiding by this ordinance.' 'He reported that the majority bf the people
do not know about the ordinance and are very cooperative when they are informed.
SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT:
Scott Harr stated that the "Clinton Cop" has been hired and has started training. No further report.
INSPECTIONS DIVISION:
Steve Kirchman stated that there are plans for a new hotel, church and a coffeeshop. Centex Homes is
looking at building in Chanhassen again.
PUBLIC SAFETY EDUCATION /CRIME PREVENTION:
Scott Harr stated that Beth Hoiseth has been busy with neighborhood watches and bike rodeos.
Scott Harr stated that plans for the Safety Camp are underway.
Scott Harr stated that the bike helmet sales are going good.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT BOARD:
Scott Harr stated that the board is meeting every other Friday to keep on top of emergency planning.
Steve Kirchman reported on generators. Public Works has a portable generator but in the case of an
emergency they would very likely be using it so arrangements have been made with Ziegler Corp. to
provide, on short notice, a generator to power up all of City Hall.
Commissioner Bernhjelm suggested a military surplus store as an outlet for generators.
Steve Kirchman talked about the idea of renting a trailer for an emergency command post. It could be
used for issuing permits out in the field or for clean -up activities. Park & Rec department and Crime
Prevention division could probably also have use for the trailer. Steve Kirchman was checking prices.
An 8 foot wide, 24,28 and 32 foot long would cost from $2,000. to $8,000.
OLD BUSINESS:
Jim McMahon was asked to appear at the meeting to discuss Chanhassen Fire Department long range
planning but Jim was unable to attend.
Scott Harr stated that the Fire Department has questions about the idea of sharing in a Fire
Department Training Facility. Discussions continue.
NEW BUSINESS:
Scott Harr showed a video relating to his thoughts for a police & fire entrance sculpture to be placed
at the entrance to Public Safety Department. He asked for thoughts from the Commission on this.
Commissioner Dockendorf stated that she thought the public would think this was being purchased with
their tax dollars and she would like to see the idea set aside until the park like setting was completed on
the south side of City hall and it might be placed there. Commissioners Beniek, Bernhjelm, and Wyf&ls
all agreed it was a good idea but they felt it should be part of a long term plan.
Commissioner Beniek motioned, Commissioner Bernhjelm seconded to adjourn the meeting. All voted
in favor and the motion passed.
