BOX 147 • CHANHASSEN, MINNESOTA 55317 (612) 937 -1900 • FAX (612) 937 -5739 MEMORANDUM TO: Todd Hoffinan, Director of Park and Recreation FROM: Patty Dexter, Recreation Supervisor DATE: January 2, 1997 SUBJ: Chanhassen Recreation Center Gym Schedule As I become more familiar with the operations of the Chanhassen Recreation Center, I see areas that could use some restructuring to better meet the needs of the customer. One area that needed improvement was the gym schedule. I have created a new chart format with all gym hours designated to a program or rental. My goal is to produce a gym schedule four times a year on designated dates that would continue from year to year. This would'provide consistency to both the Recreation Center and the customer. Communication between Jerry and myself will continue to ensure that Jerry's programs/leagues receive scheduling priority over non -park and recreation programs. To address the demand of community athletics, I have taken the following approach: "X" many hours will appear on every gym schedule and will be designated for community athletics. To date, one athletic association does not have priority over another in reserving the gym. At the appropriate time, a letter stating a meeting date will be sent to the community athletic associations. This will provide the users with dates and times that the gym will be available to reserve. It is at this meeting that the users can reserve gym time. I have attached a copy of the new gym schedule from January 6 - February 28. November proved to be the best month yet with $16,240 in revenue generated. The majority of the revenue came from exercise ($5,689), dance ($4,705), and rentals ($3,668). Attached are the following three charts: • Revenue /expenditure comparison; • Revenue chart by category • Revenue /expenditure report (itemized by account). The revenue goal for 1996 is $117,000. To meet this, our revenue goal is $11,100 for December. If we include the value of in -kind rentals ($12,129.38 from January- November), the goal has been met. A 1996 yearend report will be compiled upon receipt of final 1996 revenue and expenditure figures from Pam Snell. I expect to complete this report by mid - March. g: \park \patty\rec.ctr\novrpt.doc Chanhassen Recreation Center Revenue /Expenditure (O & M) Comparison 250,000.00 225,000.00 200,000.00 175,000.00 150,000.00 125,000.00 100,000.00 75,000.00 50,000.00 25,000.00 0.00 To meet the 50% goal, $11,100 in revenue needs to be generated in December. CG Last night, when I called you about our parking lot situation, you could have said, "It's Christmas Eve -- It's not my job -- It's someone else's responsibility." Instead you graciously came right over and plowed us out yourself -- at 9:45 pm on Christmas Eve! We have you to thank for a beautiful evening. Over 100 people came to the service which we had been working on for weeks. If you hadn't plowed our parking lot, many people wouldn't have been able to even get there due to the dangerously low temperatures and the need to walk a few blocks because of all the snow. As it was, many were able to park close by, worship and experience a special evening. >0 Thank you for your kindness. I would like to update the Chanhassen Lions on our ongoing cooperative projects. Lions Field - Lake Ann Park The City Council awarded the contract for lighting ballfields #4 and #5 on September 23. Electrical Installation and Maintenance of Maple Plain is the contractor. Excessively wet field conditions this fall forced them to wait until freeze up before commencing work. All underground conduit is now in place. Footings for the light towers are being augured and poured. Work will continue into January and February with light poles being delivered and erected and wiring completed. Spectator seating improvements will be completed next spring. I will have design alternatives for the Lions Field Dedication Monument prepared after the first of the year. Please let me know if I can be scheduled on a future meeting agenda to present these alternatives. Upon selection of a monument by the Lions, I will coordinate its delivery and installation. The monument sign will then await unveiling until the dedication of the field this spring. Lions Playground - Chanhassen Recreation Center As you know, this is a two -part project. Approximately $25,000 worth of landscaping improvements need to be completed prior to installation of the playground apparatus. The landscaping is a City project, (see attached bidform). We solicited bids for this work late Chanhassen Lions 12/17/96 Page 2 this fall. The proposals received were unacceptable and thus rejected. The work will be re- bid in February or March. The second phase of this project is the selection, ordering, and installation of the "Lions" Playground Apparatus. I will contact Lions Ed Ginsbach and Lowell Vetter in January to initiate the selection process. I have enclosed a timetable for both the Lake Ann Park and Chanhassen Recreation Center projects. Earl, I hope your presidency has progressed smoothly. The City of Chanhassen looks forward to a continued partnership with the Chanhassen Lions. Warmest regards in this holiday season. A young man on board with EMT training volunteered to help. Gallantly he performed CPR with the assistance of our flight attendants for nearly 30 minutes until we were able to make an emergency landing in Denver. Having first hand experience with CPR I know how physically exhausting this event was. His efforts were unselfish and courageous. My understanding is the Denver medical examiner pronounced the passenger dead, after being removed from the aircraft. Despite the somber outcome, with this volunteers efforts the passenger was given the best chance to survive the ordeal. The volunteer passenger's name is Mr. Greg Hayes, a member of the Chanhassen, MN Fire and rescue squad. I personally thanked him for his efforts and i intended to contact his chief and relate his actions. I thought it might be appropriate, if you agree, that Mr. Hayes receive some letter of commendation or other gratuitous thanks from NWA. His complete name and address is: Greg Hayes 6881 Red Wing Lane Chanhassen, MN 55317 I Additionally, the city of Denver/ airport personnel, employees of American west and United, Denver Airport Fire and Rescue, and Denver's helicopter dispatched paramedics provided impassive response to our needs. Our operations in Denver is not staffed in those wee hours of the morning. Everyone's professionalism, made it possible for us to continue to MSP with as little as possible disruption to our other passengers. I will make efforts through flight operations and the Denver station to thank those people. And of course the Professional response by my fellow crew members will be acknowledged as well.
