PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
JANUARY 9, 1997
PRESENT: Bill Bernhjelm, Greg Weber, Jim Sloss, Steve Labatt, Eldon Berkland
ABSENT: Brian Beniek

Chairperson Labatt opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m.
Commissioner Weber motioned, Commissioner Bernhjelm seconded, to approve the November
14, 1996, minutes as written. All voted in favor and the motion passed.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Chief Wing reported on the new trucks and what an outstanding department Chanhassen is. He
reported that the responses are positive toward the 2 positions; Mark Littf n - Fire Marshal and
the new position; Greg Hayes - Fire Inspector /Training Coordinator.
SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT
Director Harr updated the Commission on the "Clinton Cop" candidate interviews held on
Wednesday, January 8, 1997.
INSPECTION DIVISION
No Report.
PUBLIC SAFETY EDUCATION /CRIME PREVENTION
No Report.
OLD BUSINESS
Director Harr discussed the issue of weather sirens. Ideas consisted of splitting the cost with the
City of Eden Prairie for a siren on the east end of town; use of water towers; using private
cellular towers with lease agreement; keeping it for the 1998 budget.
Director Harr suggested that the agenda stay open for the next commission meeting to discuss
long range planning.

Director Harr discussed the City of Chanhassen's position with the current animal control
contract with other cities. Chanhassen has become overwhelmed with animal control in these
contract cities. Should it be maintained for 1998?
Director Harr stated that there have been only 2 applications submitted for the Public Safety
Commission vacancy. It was suggested that the City Council interview the 2 candidates and
make a decision.
NEW BUSINESS
LOWERING BAC TO 0.08 %
Bill Bernhjelm stated that this issue was to be decided by the Minnesota Chief's Association.
CSO EVALUATION
Director Harr discussed evaluating the Community Service Officer program and what their time
should be spend doing. How much time is spent in other cities; how much time is actually spent
in the City of Chanhassen.
PUBLIC SAFETY ADDITION
Director Harr updated the commission on the successful move into the new Public Safety Wing.
He commended all of the employees for a job well done. A tour was given to the commission
members.
NEW MAYOR
On Monday, January 13, 1997, at the city council meeting, the new Mayor of Chanhassen,
Nancy Mancino, will be sworn into office.
Commissioner Sloss motioned, Commissioner Bernhjelm seconded it, to adjourn the meeting.
All voted in favor and the motion passed.
