SUBJ: Arbor Day Proclamation
This year the City of Chanhassen is planning an Arbor Day celebration to be held Saturday, April
26. On that day, community groups will be cleaning neighborhood parks in the morning and at
noon the event will expand its activities at City Hall. Included will be a ceremonial tree planting
and speech by the mayor. In order to properly recognize the day, I am requesting City Council to
pass the attached proclamation concerning Arbor Day.
The schedule for the Arbor Day celebration is as follows:
9am -II am
Adopt -A -Park
clean -up at neighborhood parks by local community groups
11 am -Noon
Thank you luncheon for park clean -up groups at City Hall
Noon Speech by mayor
Ceremonial tree planting
Noon - 4 p.m. City Hall
Presentations at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. by the Raptor Center in Chanhassen City Council Chambers

PROCLAMATION DECLARING SATURDAY, APRIL 26 AS ARBOR DAY
WHEREAS, In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of
Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of
more than a million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water,
cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen
and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes,
fuel for our fires and countless other wood products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality
of business areas, and beautify our community; and
WHEREAS, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, Chanhassen has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National
Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree - planting ways.
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Nancy K. Mancino, Mayor of the City of Chanhassen, do
hereby proclaim Saturday, April 26, 1997 as ARBOR DAY in the City of Chanhassen. l
urge all citizens to support efforts to care for our trees and woodlands and to support our
city's community forestry program; and further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden
the hearts and promote the well -being of present and future generations.
