REGULAR MEETING
August 15, 2000
Chairman Dale Geving called the meeting to order at 9:30am.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Sherol Howard, Albin Olson, Jean Mancini, Mel Kurvers, Dale
Geving and Tom Faust.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Bobbie Headla.
STAFF PRESENT: Kara Wickenhauser, Senior Center Coordinator and Sharmin A1-
Jaff, Senior Planner.
VISITORS PRESENT: None.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA: Commissioner Albin Olson moved to approve the
agenda. Commissioner Sherol Howard seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the
motion was carried.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Jean Mancini moved to approve the minutes. Mel
Kurvers seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion was carried.
CONGREGATE DINING & MEALS ON WHEELS: Remains steady. For the month
of July Congregate Dining averaged 5 people a day and Meals on Wheels averaged 12
people a day. More Meals on Wheels drivers needed.
UPDATE ON SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES: Upcoming trips and activities
include; Science Museum Trip 8/23/00; Minnesota State Fair Trip 8/24/00; Foot Care
Clinic 8/25/00; Stamping Class 9/08/00; Harvest Potluck & Cards 9/16/00. Flu shot
clinic was rescheduled from October l0th to Tuesday, November 21st from 9:00am -
11:30am. The Senior Center will be closed on Monday, September 4th to observe Labor
Day.
SENIOR HOUSING MARKET UPDATE: The Senior Commission reviewed the
research piece prepared by Maxfield Research Inc. The research piece led into discussion
regarding the possibilities of Assisted Living in the community. There was some
discussion on the possibilities of Centennial Hills converting into assisted living if the
rental does not remain at a high occupancy level. There are no concerns at this time. The
Powers Ridge Development management has yet to contact the City about potential
assisted living. No other contacts have been made with the City in regards to Assisted
Living. The Senior Commission would like to invite Mark Elko from Victoria to the next
meeting. Mark is currently negotiating land on the Villages on the Pond.
SENIOR COMMISSION BUDGET: A City survey has been requested in the City's
general budget and will include senior questions. Roughly $1750.00 was budgeted for
the printing of a Senior Awareness insert for the Villager for May 2001. Budget has yet
to be approved. All the rest of the budget requests remained the same.
SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS: Make an agenda item for the next meeting to
discuss the Senior Awareness Month idea and to form a committee of Senior Commission
members as well as Senior Advisory Board members. The signs requested for the from
flowerbed are completed. The signs read "Maintained by the Senior Commission."
These signs can be used for any project the Commission chooses to take on. The Senior
Commission meeting time is changed from 9:30am - 11:00am to 10:00am - 11:30am.
ADJOURNMENT: Jean Mancini motioned to adjourn the meeting. Sherol Howard
seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
