Roundhouse Renovation Project Update
The Roundhouse renovation project has made a tremendous difference in the
appearance of the exterior of the structure. Castle Roofing and Siding has
completed the new roof, shingling, soffit and fascia, exterior surface preparation,
painting and window installation. Working on a round structure proved to be
challenging, but representatives from Castle Roofing and Siding were very
resourceful in finding creative solutions. I am pleased to report that the
neighborhood renovation group has also made extensive progress on the interior
of the building. The building has been cleared of debris and much of the
necessary demolition work has been completed. A flyer explaining the status of
the neighborhood efforts is attached. Copies of the flyer are stored in a mail box
at the Roundhouse for the public to pick up.
The Park Maintenance crew is scheduling the installation of an exterior
"accessible" sidewalk connecting the park trail to the front door of the building.
The neighborhood plans to continue their interior renovation efforts with the goal
of having the building open as a warming house this winter. This volunteer group
is also planning to complete landscaping and gardening work on the exterior of
the Roundhouse. An open house and picnic celebrating the progress to date is
being planned by the neighborhood renovation group for some time this fall.
Invitations will be forthcoming.

Roundhouse Renovation Update 2003
At the last City Council meeting, which was held on May 12, 2003, the fate of the
Roundhouse was finally decided. It will be restored starting shortly. The first items to be
done are painting the outside, installing new windows and a roof, which the City will
fund (except for the purchase of the windows). The rest of the work will be up to our
neighborhood taskforce' Following are some questions and answers. If you have further
questions or would like more details, feel free to contact Deanna or Ed.
I still believe it would be less expensive to just tear the building down and put up a
post shelter?
Actually, the cost to tear the Roundhouse down is estimated at $18,000, with an
additional $30,000 to Put up an open shelter in it's place. This would limit use of the
structure to summer months.
What if you raise more money than what's needed to renovate the Roundhouse?
Now that would be a great problem to have!! We'd first need to make decisions about
the Roundhouse .... should we install a bathroom or make other improvements that were
not originally planned? 'Otherwise, we plan.to use it for other park projects such as
boards for the ice rink., tennis courts, etc.
Do we know the true history of the building?
The RoundhOuse was once a water tower for the town of Wood Lake in Western
Minnesota in the early 1900's. In the 1940's, Ben Lane and his s°ns moved the structure
to Chanhassen and used it as a lake home. The building was used for bible study, story
telling, and once again as a residence until the early 1990's. ItL remained VaCant since
and was kept flora being destroyed at the time other structures on the property we're
being burned for a City park, due to it's uniqueness. Chuck Lane, who helped put the
structure in its place, has been in contact with us and will be providing more history
about the structure. A few newspaper articles about the structure are stapled on to the
Roundhouse. An article was also in the Chanhassen Villager (May 15 issue).
Is it true that the building contains asbestos and. lead paint?
Yes, but the amOunt is very limited and the toxic levels are low. In fact, according to the
certified companies we've had out to give estimates on the removal of both, we could as
residents, legally remove it ourselves. "
What does the City plan to use the building for once it's renovated?
During winter months, it will be used as a warming house. Year round, it will be used for
a gathering spot for families and friends for reunions, picnics, parties, etc and community
