MARCH 14, 2011
Mayor Furlong called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. The meeting was opened with the
Pledge to the Flag.

Mayor Furlong amended the agenda to include an update from city staff regarding the watermain
break in the Chanhassen Hills neighborhood under New Business.

CONSENT AGENDA: Councilwoman Tjornhom moved, Councilman Laufenburger
seconded to approve the following consent agenda items pursuant to the City Manager’s
recommendations:
a. Approval of Minutes:

d. Approve Resolution Accepting $2,000 Donation from the General
Mills Foundation for Safety Camp.

All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 5 to 0.
VISITOR PRESENTATIONS:
None.
UPDATE ON WATERMAIN BREAK IN CHANHASSEN HILLS NEIGHBORHOOD.
City Manager Todd Gerhardt provided an update on the status of resident claims from Travelers
Insurance Company before Mayor Furlong invited the public to speak. Amy Powell, 8581
Chanhassen Hills Drive South voiced her frustration on the information and attention the
neighbors are receiving from the City and asked that somebody from the City work with them.
Jennifer Thorpe, 1050 Lake Susan Drive showed pictures of water in her basement on the night
of the event. Veronica Scholz, 1070 Lake Susan Drive voiced concern about the lack of
communication from the City and the hope that the City will do something to help the residents
even after Travelers Insurance arrives at a final decision due to the fact that some residents do
not have insurance coverage for this type of incident. Jim Wolf, 8585 Chanhassen Hills Drive
South wanted to get across to council members how much this has affected residents in this area
and how frustrated they are. Humphrey McKenzie, 1021 Lake Susan Drive explained that the
homeowners do everything they can to take care of their property but would like some support
from the City in going through the process. Jim Subak, 1060 Lake Susan Drive thanked the
previous speakers for stating the neighborhood’s case. He explained that he was out of town
when this occurred, thanked the City for providing dumpsters in addition to the dumpsters he
and four other neighbors already had, and what was covered by his insurance policy. Ray
Schenk, 1130 Dove Court suggested a third party, independent investigator look into the matter.
Humphrey McKenzie asked what homeowners can do to protect themselves in the future and
clarification of what exactly happened in this situation. Carlos Puig, 8581 Chanhassen Hills
Drive South asked if there was any way the City could have seen the increase in water usage and
suggested the City install alarms in main pipes into certain neighborhoods. Patty Besser, 6518
Grey Fox Curve asked about the difference between one watermain break and another watermain
break, why citizens are not being treated equally and fairly and what does it take to get a good
will offering from the City. Councilman Laufenburger, who lives in the Chanhassen Hills

neighborhood, asked staff to prepare sewer information to potentially put on the City’s website
and/or Chanhassen Connection as a means of educating the public.
APPOINTMENTS TO THE PLANNING COMMISSION.
Mayor Furlong moved, Councilwoman Tjornhom seconded that the City Council appoint
Mark Undestad and Kathleen Thomas to 3 year terms, Kim Tennyson to a 2 year term and
Lisa Hokkanen to a 1 year term on the City of Chanhassen Planning Commission. All
voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 5 to 0.

Councilwoman Ernst moved, Councilman McDonald seconded to adjourn the meeting. All
voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 5 to 0. The City Council
meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
