Adopt Resolution Supporting Funding to Advance Construction of
New Highway 212 in the Southwest Metro Area
REQUESTED ACTION
Adopt the attached resolution supporting funding of advance construction of New
Highway 212 in the Southwest Metro Area.
DISCUSSION
The Southwest Corridor Transportation Coalition has requested all of its members
adopt a resolution supporting the funding of New Highway 212 (currently
referred to as TH 312).
The attached resolution has been revised from the sample supplied by the
Coalition to better fit the City of Chanhassen. Wording was added to the
resolution showing the City's concern about environmentally sensitive areas
potentially impacted by the new roadway.

RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT APPROVING FUNDING TO ADVANCE
CONSTRUCTION OF NEW TRUNK HIGHWAY 212IN THE SOUTHWEST
METRO AREA IN 2002
WHEREAS, State Trunk Highway 212 is a critical transportation corridor serving the
economic interests of Southwest Minnesota from the Twin Cities to the South Dakota border, and
WHEREAS, the United States Congress has designated TH 212 as part of the National
Highway System and the Minnesota Department of Transportation has officially identified TH 212
as a critical "inter-regional corridor" in the state, and
WHEREAS, reconstruction of TH 212 to a four-lane state highway from the Twin Cities to
the South Dakota border has long been recognized as one of the top transportation and economic
priorities for Southwest Minnesota, and
WHEREAS, construction of New Highway 212 in the counties of Hennepin and Carver
(CR 147 to CSAH 4) represents a critical component in improving transportation service throughout
Southwest Minnesota, and
WHEREAS, the project to construct New Highway 212 has received all necessary federal,
state, local government, community and environmental approvals and is ready to go to design and
construction, and
WHEREAS, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has designated the project to
construct New Highway 212 as the state's top highway expansion project and the first to receive
necessary state funding when such funding is available, and
WHEREAS, due to insufficient state highway funding, construction of New Highway 212
is currently scheduled to begin in 2011, and
WHEREAS, the start of construction of New Highway 212 could be advanced from 2011
to 2004 with approval of sufficient state funding during the 2002 legislative session by the
Minnesota Legislature and Governor Jesse Ventura, and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Chanhassen City Council supports
approval in 2002 by the Minnesota Legislature and Governor Ventura of sufficient additional state
transportation funding to advance the start of construction of New Highway 212 from 2011 to 2004.
FURTHERMORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Chanhassen desires that said
New Highway 212 be designed and constructed in a manner sensitive to the unique environmental
concerns specifically in the Assumption Creek and Seminary Fen areas located in Chanhassen but
also of any other environmentally sensitive areas that may be located in the corridor.
