Public Safety Commission Minutes dated October 12, 1995C llni'� PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES OCTOBER 12, 1995 PRESENT: Eldon Berkland, Bill Bemhjelm, Greg Weber, Steve Labatt, Dave Dummer EXCUSED: Brian Beniek STAFF PRESENT: Scott Harr - Public Safety Director, Bob Zydowsky - Public Safety Officer, Sheila Losby - Community Service Officer, Leslie Michel- Public Safety Support Staff GUESTS PRESENT: Sergeant Larry Wittsack -Carver County Sheriff's Department Chairman Eldon Berkland called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. After reviewing the video "Future Paradigms" by Joel Baker, the meeting was devoted to future ' planning. The video's main objective was to discuss change in a positive manner. What can you do to change your organization ie..openess to new ideas and perceptions, what does the future ' hold? Director Harr brought up several issues to discuss. Future planning for the Public Safety Department, Building Department, Community Service Officer coverage, how long will they ' continue to provide animal control in other cities? Fire Department growth. Commissioner Berkland suggested several alternative ideas should be looked at - short term and long term. ' Commissioner Bemhjelm suggested that the plans could be based on population levels, not by year steps. The importance of Community Oriented Policing and Crime Prevention was stressed. ' A town meeting on public safety issues was discussed as a way of seeing what the public thinks of public safety issues in Chanhassen. Commissioner Berkland suggested we have separate meetings with different departments (public safety, building, fire etc.) as the topic. There was discussion on who should be involved in these ' meetings? Mayor, Council, Administration... The idea of mailing questionnaires to residents was discussed. Scott will develop a draft copy. ' Commissioner Bemhjelm stated that Chanhassen has already taken the right approach for the future, "prevention" has been in our favor. ' It was discussed that if the effort to work on examining where we are going in the future is to continue, the support of the Council is necessary. It was decided that Eldon Berkland would be meeting with Bill Bemhjelm to plan a presentation to the City Council. g .\safety\sh\pscmin10
