DATE: July 6, 1994 SUBJ: Accept Donation from the Chanhassen Lions Club 14a ►es, 3 S'eDsn"t0e p con. meq ti?,T.irtei tv GnucM.S - As you are aware, the Chanhassen Lions Club has recently made donations to both the Chanhassen Park and Recreation Department and the Chanhassen Public Safety Department. On behalf of the City of Chanhassen, I am excited ; to announce that the Lions have elected to donate $17,000 to be used to purchase park and, recreation equipment. Of this $17,000, $6,000 is slated to be expended on projects which directly benefit the Chanhassen Athletic Association Youth Sports Programs. It has been discussed that the remaining $11,000 will be set aside in an escrow account to be used at.a future date to assist in equipping the new Chanhassen Recreation Center /park site to be located at; Highway 5 and Galpin Boulevard. Representatives of the Lions organization have kept in touch with the department periodically as their charitable gambling fund has continued to gain strength. I am pleased to tell you that this donation truly represents a sincere interest by the Lions organization to help their community, they came to us—we did not solicit them. The: Chanhassen Athletic Association will have the liberty of selecting the projects on which they would like to invest their portion of this donation. The $11,000 targeted at city park and recreation equipment may be invested in a variety of ways, i e. hockey boards, fitness equipment, playground equipment, etc. This $11,000, when combined with the < -10 that the dark and Recreation Commission initially set aside for the purchase of .equipment for .the ; new recreation .center represents, a good start towards completely Outfitting the facility. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the Chanhassen City Council gratefully accept the donation of $17,000 from the Chanhassen Lions Club to be used f& purchase of park and recreation equipment in the City of Chanhassen; and that the Park and Recreation Director be directed to send the appropriate thanks to the Lions organization.
