Council Interviews
Following a meeting with Mayor Jansen this morning, and having seen the
number of applications that have been received for the Council vacancy, I
thought it wise to prepare this memo so that you can consider in advance some
issues you will be facing in a very short time.
First, your meeting on January 29th is still on as scheduled. Obviously it is up to
you as a group to decide what you wish to accomplish at that meeting.
However, it is my suggestion that you simply take the time to familiarize
yourselves with the credentials that have been submitted. You may wish to
make sure that you each have similar, although not necessarily identical,
understandings of the credentials and certain representations made thereon.
Secondly, the Mayor and I have discussed and reviewed the process initially
considered for the selection of this individual. Again, given the number of
applicants involved, some reconsideration of the process certainly was in order.
While the ultimate decision is up to the Council, at this point the Mayor and I
might suggest something along the following:
First, in order to provide you with some measure by which an initial
screening process could occur, we might suggest an initial 3 O-minute
interview with each of the candidates before you. This could occur
beginning as soon as February 5th, which is a Monday, with the balance
of the 30-minute interviews continued to some time during that same
week. Please take time at this point to review your calendar for that
week and bring your calendar with you to the meeting on the 29th.
Following the initial screening interviews of 30 minutes each, the
Council might be well served to identify finalists (a number yet to be
determined) for a second one-hour interview. This second one-hour
interview is expected to be more thorough in nature. These interviews
could well be held the week of February 12th. Doing these more lengthy

interviews this week allows us to still meet our unofficial timetable of
filling the vacant seat by February 26.
If you have any questions about this memo, or some of the modifications
considered therein, please contact my office or Mayor Jansen. Thank you.
