SUBJ: Consider Renaming McGlynn Drive (from Audubon Road to Galpin

For the past month or so, I have casually and informally solicited staff input on an appropriate
new name for this roadway. Some of the nominations received were very interesting, however,
one candidate stood out from the rest, that name would be "Coulter Boulevard ". The Coulter
family has a long standing history in this area and is the meritorious choice given the impending
centennial celebration next year. There currently exists a short segment of Coulter Drive between

Market Boulevard and Kerber Boulevard (next to City Hall). However, the near term expansion
of City Hall towards West 78th Street will eliminate this road in the near future. There may be
a brief span of time when the roadway between Audubon Road and Galpin Boulevard and the
existing segment adjacent to City Hall would both have the Coulter name. To limit confusion,
the new Coulter segment will be termed Boulevard whereas the existing segment (next to City
Hall) is Coulter Drive. It is interesting to note that Webster's New World Dictionary defines the
term "Boulevard" as being a broad, well made street, often lined with trees. This definition
certainly fits the planning and design theme for the new roadway.
Unless there are any questions or problems at the City Council level, it is recommended that the
existing and proposed roadway segments of McGlynn Drive between Audubon Road and Galpin
Boulevard be renamed to Coulter Boulevard and that the extension of this roadway west of
Galpin Boulevard would also continue to carry the Coulter name.
