During the staff presentation of the 1994 Public Works goals I had the opportunity to discuss with the
Council one of this year's imperative capital improvement projects which is the addition of Well No 7
to the City's water supply system. This improvement project was identified in the approved
comprehensive water supply plan and programmed funding was included in the 1994 budget.
The consulting engineering firm of Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik & Associates was commissioned during
the summer of 1990 to conduct the hydrogeologic study which will provide information on appropriate
well site regions which meet design flow requirements. This study is nearing its completion and, as such,
pertinent information will be incorporated into the preparation of plans and specifications and identifying
potential locations for the well site. Mr. Richard Foster of Bonestroo has provided a project cost estimate
along with an anticipated project timetable. The intent is to have this facility on line by the fall of this
year. Engineering fees for the project will be based on the previously approved standard engineering
services contract agreement with Bonestroo.
I also mentioned to the Council of the new state mandates requiring municipalities to develop water
conservation and emergency action plans for the water supply system. Bonestroo has estimated this
additional work will take aDnroximately 3.0 to 46:1miro to nnm hlptp
It is therefore recommended that the .City Council authorized Bonestroo, Rosene, 'Anderlik & Associates
to prepare the project plans and specifications for the construction of Well No. 7, Project No. 94 -3 and,
in concert, prepare the rr . r.'re ! , =pater conservation emergency action plans.

The City of Chanhassen's Water Supply and Distribution Plan projected that Well No. 7 will be
required in 1994 to meet increasing water demands. The report also recommended that the well be
located in the Galpin Lake Well Field to balance supply between the City's two well fields. Because
of the timing and desired location, Well No. 7 is expected to be a Jordan sandstone well similar to
existing Well No. 3.
The first step of the design process will be to identify an approvable site for the well and to prepare
the water conservation and emergency action plans recently required for all new wells. We assume
that most of the information for these plans has already been completed by the City in the form of
sprinkling bans and plumbing codes.
Identification of a well site will be assisted by the City's Well Field Study just being completed. It is
anticipated that the well will be located in the High Pressure 7.one (north of Highway 5 and west of
Galpin Boulevard). Depending on the precise well location, we may be able to eliminate the existing
high service booster station on Galpin Boulevard. This would save some costs, since the booster .
station is in need of repair at this time.
The estimated cost for the well, pumping facility, and connecting water main is as follows:

We will complete the well and pumphouse design on a fee basis according to the terms of our
standard contract with the City. We will also prepare the required water conservation and emergency
action plans on a per diem basis. This work should take 30 -40 hours.

As the well site has not been selected, costs relating to well depth and water main length could be
affected. The proposed total project cost does not include the costs for land acquisition. A
