MEMORANDUM
TO: Todd Gerhardt, Acting City Manager '-
FROM: Greg Hayes, Fire Inspector/Training Chief
DATE: June 20, 2001
SUBJECT: Fire Department Review at the June 25, 2001 City Council meeting
The Chanhassen Fire Department has seen a very busy month responding to 2 major incidents
and severe storms.
During the week of June 11- 17 the fire department responded to 32 calls. In comparison, we
usually see an average of 60 calls per month. The incidents we responded to were:
Monday, June 11,2001, a severe storm came through the. City of Chanhassen. With this storm
we had areas of town reporting very high winds and golf ball to baseball size hail. NUmerous
citizens had storm damage to siding and roofs. Our Station 2 suffered hail damage to the siding
and roof.
Tuesday, June 12, 2001, a roof fire was reported at Rosemount Inc. Upon the fire departments
arrival we found that a large dumpster next to the building had ignited and fire extended-into
the building. The fire department was able to push the fire out of the building thus greatly
saving property at the facility. The fire had also extended to the roof and crews had to tear
apart the roof to extinguish the fire. Assisting agencies were; Chaska Fire, Victoria Fire,
Excelsior Fire, and Eden Prairie Fire. The dollar loss has not been determined yet, however it
could be over $400,000.00.
Wednesday, June 13, 2001, the Chanhassen Fire Department responded to Lake Ann Park for a
missing person. Upon further investigation it was determined that the person was in the lake.
Due to lightening and a thunderstorm no dive operation was undertaken.
On Thursday, June 14, 2001, and Friday, June 15, 2001, the Chanhassen Fire Department
assisted the Carver County Sheriff's Department with the recovery operation at Lake Ann. The
fire department put over 22 hours on the recovery operation.
Also during the week of June 11-17, Paisley Park held its annual celebration. The Fire
Prevention Department did stand by during the public performances. The hours for the live
performances ran from 9:00 pm till 4:00 am. The Fire Prevention Department logged 20 hours
on stand by for the week. The performances went very well due to excellent planning on behalf
of Paisley Park Facilities Director Fred Evens.
