MEMORANDUM
TO: Todd Gerhardt, City Manager
FROM: Todd Hoffman, Park and Recreation Director
DATE: March 26, 2012
SUBJ: Approve Lake Susan Park Baseball Field Backstop
Improvement Project and Resolution Accepting $2,500 donation
from Chanhassen Athletic Association
- i74-
PROPOSED MOTION:
"The city council approves the Lake Susan Park baseball field backstop
improvement project and approves a resolution accepting a $2,500 donation
from the Chanhassen Athletic Association and approving a $3,273 matching
expenditure from the park dedication fund."
Approval requires a simple majority vote of the council.
The Lake Susan Park baseball field was built in 1988. Over the years, many
conversations have come and gone regarding, the distance between home plate
and the backstop, a distance most consider too great. The Chanhassen Athletic
Association would like to contribute $2,500 —half of the money needed to
remedy this situation by moving the current back fence of the backstop forward
sixteen feet. This action would reduce the distance between home plate and the
back fence from 62.5 feet to 46.5 feet, giving catchers a better opportunity to
field a passed ball without runners from third base, second base, and sometimes
even first base scoring.
This action would also match more closely the Lake Susan field and the baseball
field at Bandimere Community Park, which features a distance of 43.5 feet.
Creating fields used for the same activity that exhibit nearly uniform
specifications results in teams having a better overall playing experience. The
Park and Recreation Commission discussed this proposal during the visitor
presentation portion of their March 20, 2012 meeting, and were supportive of
this proposal.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the city council adopt a resolution accepting a $2,500
donation from the Chanhassen Athletic Association and approving a matching
