SUB J: Arbor Day 1999
This year the City's Arbor Day celebration will be held on Saturday, May 8 from
noon to 3 p.m. at city hall. On that day, community groups will be cleaning
neighborhood parks in the morning, the Chanhassen Horticultural Club will be
planting trees and shrubs at the Depot, volunteers from Pillsbury will be working
on a reforestation project along Bluff Creek and at noon the Arbor Day event will
begin its activities at City Hall. In order to properly recognize the day, I am
requesting City Council to pass the attached proclamation concerning Arbor Day.
The schedule for Arbor Day is as follows:
9 am - 11 am
Adopt-A-Park
Clean-up at neighborhood parks by local community groups.
9 am - afternoon
Pillsbury volunteers planting trees and shrubs for reforestation Project along Bluff Creek.
10 am - 11 am
Chanhassen Horticultural Club, St. Hubert's School, and PillSbury volunteers landscaping
at Depot. Ceremony to follow p!anting.
11 am - Noon
Thank you luncheon for park clean-up groups at City Hall
Noon - 3 p.m. City Hall
Raptor Center Presentations at 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.: Chanhassen City Council Chambers

PROCLAMATION DECLARING SATURDAY, MAY 8 AS ARBOR DAY
WHEREAS, In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a
special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, this holiday, Called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a
million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and
cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires
and countless other wood products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business
areas, and beautify our community; and
WHEREAS, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, Chanhassen has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day
Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting ways.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nancy K. Mancino, Mayor of the City of Chanhassen, do hereby proclaim
Saturday, May 8, 1999 as ARBOR DAY in the City of Chanhassen. I urge all citizens to support efforts to
care for our trees and woodlands and to support our city's community forestry program; and further, I urge all
citizens to plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.
