Finance Chanhassen's Arbor Day celebration will be held on Saturday, May 5 this year at
Phone: 952.227.1140 Lake Ann Park. In honor of the day, 18 trees will be planted in the park around
Fax: 952.227.1110 ball fields 1 and 2. These fields are currently ringed by a single species of tree —
Park & Recreation green ash. With the imminent threat of the emerald ash borer, planting a diversity
Phone: 952.227.1120 of trees around the ball fields and throughout the park is a prudent and long -term
Fax: 952.227.1110 solution to the eventual loss of the existing ash. All of the trees will be planted by
community volunteers from local businesses, churches, scout troops,
Recreation Center neighborhoods and families. The event will begin at 9 am with a gathering of

tree - related activities for kids in attendance. The event will be held rain or shine

PROCLAMATION DECLARING SATURDAY, MAY 5 AS ARBOR DAY
WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a
special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a
million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and
cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires
and countless other wood products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business
areas, and beautify our community; and
WHEREAS, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, Chanhassen has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day
Foundation and desires to continue its tree - planting ways.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Thomas A. Furlong, Mayor of the City of Chanhassen, do hereby proclaim
Saturday, May 5, 2012 as ARBOR DAY in the City of Chanhassen. I urge all citizens to support efforts to
care for our trees and woodlands and to support our city's community forestry program; and further, I urge all
citizens to plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well -being of present and future generations.
