While the City can and will do its part by carefully regulating new development, we depend upon our citizens to make environmentally sound decisions. To this end, as one of our educational activities, we I sought to have storm water catch basins labeled. Through pipes and ditches, water and other materials entering these basins runs directly into our lakes and wetlands. It was therefor important to remind people that materials such as oil, fertilizer, antifreeze and the like, should I be kept out of the catch basins if we intend to continue to swim and fish in our lakes. Hiring an outside contractor or diverting Public Works', employees from assigned duties to I undertake the basin labeling program would have been an expensive proposition. We therefore sought the assistance of organizations such as the Scouts to help out. Thanks to Vickie Goers, we found that the local Girl Scout troops were willing to help. Troops #1134 under the I leadership of Sally Johnson, #110 under Nancy Everson, #963 under Linda Mady, #1594 under Katie Trent, #2146 under Judy Sones and #965 under Vickie Goers, they have completed much of the work. We understand that the local Boy Scouts will be completing the job. I On behalf of the City of Chanhassen, we are presenting a check for $250 to the Girl Scouts, for I their good work. I am certain that the environment and our community is going to be a better place because of their efforts. • 1 1 1
