FROM: John Wolff'- Fire Chief ~' "~ ~/ Greg Hayes- 1st Assistant Chief Mark Littfin- 2nd Assistant Chief September 15, 2003 Monthly City Council update DATE: SUB J: Fire Department Overview: Staffing is at 42 firefighters as of September 15, 2003, allocation is 45 PTE's. We have four members on a leave of absence; available staffing is 38. We have run into a snag with the program to "pilot" a part4ime fire inspector using current fire department personnel (10-20 hours a week to help with existing inspections). Our final candidate took a job with a new employer which conflicts with the work schedule of the PT job with the City. We are re-evaluating our other candidates and options. We are looking forward to the addition of a radio transmission site at the Chanhassen Water Tower in October to the county's new 800 MHz radio system. The new system continues to perform very well despite some earlier concerns. The new site will improve "in building" coverage. Call volume continues at a record level, approximately 25% higher than last year, through 9/1/03. At current trends, we would expect year-end calls to exceed our annual record of 799 by 80-90 calls. Fire Training: Currently, the Chanhassen Fire Department is working on refreshing their skills in the use of extrication equipment. Also, the department is conducting an awareness level training for responding to incidents involving explosives. Todd Gerhardt September 15, 2003 Page 2 As a note, over the past month we have been conducting our training with other outside agencies such as Chaska and Victoria Fire Departments. This joint training helps enhance our mutual aid operations and also helps share the costs of completing the training. Throughout Carver County Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism preparedness training is currently being offered. This training is free to the cities and is paid for by the federal government. One class that City Council might take an interest in is WMD Awareness for Elected Officials, Administrators and managers. In this class you will learn about how terrorism affects our community and the cost of preparedness. This class is being offered here at Chanhassen Fire Station #1 on October 7, 2003. The class start time is 6:30 P.M. If you have any interest in participating please let Justin know. Thanks for all of your support in training and emergency preparedness. Fire Inspections: There are no changes or updates to report. Fire Education Activities: We are beginning preparations for Fire Prevention Week (10/4-11/03) and the open house on 10/12/03. Our goal is to extend Fire Education to the public and private schools in town during the week. In the past we have instructed up to 3000 students. Our expectation is that we will exceed that number in 2003. Budget: We are working closely with City finance and administration staff as we prepare our fiscal 2004 operating and capital plans.
