SUBJ: Approve Standardization of Auxiliary Power Receptacles for Lift Station
Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 17 and 18
1
With the completion of the Upper Bluff Creek Phase I Trunk Utility Improvement Project No. 91 -17 in 1993,
I the City will have the ability to manually operate any one of the City's 22 sanitary sewer lift stations via a
portable generator system during an electrical power failure (excluding a lightning strike failure) to a lift station.
The portable generator system will incorporate standard power receptacle fittings based on the amperage and
I voltage needed to operate the pumps for the high priority lift stations. In evaluating the remaining lift stations,
a number of receptacle fittings were found which are not compatible with the portable generator system. In
order to be able to make use of the portable generator at all City lift stations, it is necessary to standardize the
power receptacle set up. It has been determined that 10 of the 22 lift stations will require receptacle
I modification. The attached letter dated November 4, 1992 from Mr. Richard Foster of Bonestroo outlines each
lift station and the associated cost for the retrofit. The total cost to retrofit the 10 referenced lift stations is
estimated at $6,200. It is recommended that the funding for this work be allocated from the Sewer and Water
I Expansion Fund 401. Standardized specifications have been established and will be implemented on all future
lift station built within the City to avoid additional retrofitting at a later date.
It is therefore recommended that the City Council approve the standardization of auxiliary power receptacles
1
for Lift Station Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 17 and 18 in the amount of $6,200.

1 Re: Auxiliary Power Receptacles
City Project 91 -17
1 Our File No. 39305
Dear Gerald:
I The following is a list of estimated costs for changing the auxiliary power receptacles on stations
that presently have standby power provisions:
I Station No. Estimated Cost
3 -Y $ 950
I 4 950
5 400
6 400
7 400
1 9 -4- 950
10 -/ 950
11 - a 400
I 17 - 3 400
18 400
Total $6,200
1 The estimated costs assume new receptacles at each station. The City could possibly save $40 on
stations 7, 17 and 18 by reusing existing housings if they are good. Then again, the electricians time
I to order and change out interiors may cost more than anticipated savings.
Please note that station Nos. 1, 2, 8, 16 and 22 do not have auxiliary power provisions and are not
I included in the cost estimate. Also, station Nos. 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20 and 21 do not require any
changes and therefore not included.
I After you have had a chance to review this information, please let us know how you wish to
proceed.
I Yours very truly, •
