Station 1 Station 2 PO Box 97 6400 Minnewashta Pkwy. 7610 Laredo Drive Excelsior, MN 5533 1 7` Chanhassen, MN 553 MEMORANDUM TO: Todd Gerhardt, City Manager FROM: John Wolff - Fire Chief Ed Coppersmith — Asst. Chief Operation Rick Rice — Asst. Chief Administration Jeff Siems — Asst. Chief Training & Safety Mark Littfin - Fire Marshal DATE: October 12, 2012 SUBJ: Monthly City Council Update Fire Department Overview: Staffing is at 49 active firefighters as of October 12, 2012._There is one firefighter currently on leave and four new members attending probationary firefighter training. There have been three retirements this year to date. Through October 1st of this year we are at 361 calls vs. 422 for 2011, we are down 14.5% for calls and 11% for paid call hours. Staff Time (not call related): Our staff time for community events, fire education, duty crew standby, and department meetings are at 2,224 hours for the year compared to 2,560 hours in 2011. Training: Training hours are at 5,583 YTD versus 2,946 in the prior year. Chief Officers completed Incident Command (IC) at the mobile Bluecard Training Center in Eden Prairie on September 14 -16. The department will also participate in joint operations (mutual aid) training at the Edina Fire training facility in November. Safety: The fire department will participate this year in the nationwide "safety stand - down" on October 29 The night will be devoted to recognizing the importance of safety in the fire service. Safety stand -down was first developed by the military as a means to enhance the cultural shift towards safety. We will be concentrating on crew resource management, situational awareness, and the importance of everyone being a safety advocate at emergency scenes. Compliance: Annual ladder, pump, hose, and PPE testing has been completed. Our annual Health Surveillance program continues for our members. SCBA testing is occurring at this time. Fire Study: Steadman Incorporated out of St. Paul, MN was hired to conduct the Master Planning /Shared Services study for the City of Chanhassen. An initial /introductory meeting will be conducted on October 17 with the firm. More details to follow. Community Activities: The Chanhassen Fire Department, along with members of the Windschitl and Wiborg families, attended the dedication of the Minnesota Fallen Firefighter Memorial on September 30 at the State Capitol. We hosted about 20 family members before the event at the fire station and then escorted them to the ceremony. Fire Marshal: Fire Prevention: The fire department is in the final days of fire prevention week's activities. We have had over 30 firefighters volunteer their time to teach our pre - school, kindergarten, first, second, and third graders from our four elementary schools about fire safety and fire prevention. We will have worked with over 1,500 kids. At the end of fire prevention week we will have our annual open house which draws in excess of 1,000 residents. Fire truck rides, spraying a fire hose, kitchen fire safety, and a bounce house are just a few of the activities that will be available. It should be a great event. It's always fun when we can open our doors to the public and show them the equipment and have them meet the firefighters who will respond in their hour of need. Fire Investigations: There is one small fire to report on at the Brookside Motor Hotel on Saturday, October 6 at 1:38 a.m. The call came in as a small fire on the outside of one of the cabins. Upon the fire department's arrival the fire was out. Currently the fire is being investigated by the Carver County Sheriff's Department and the Chanhassen Fire Department. It was suspicious in nature. Fire Inspections: Current projects at various stages of construction include K Hovnanian Town Homes, Lakeside Town Homes, Autobahn Motorplex, Goodwill Thrift Center, Beyond Beauty, The Bernard Group, Primrose Learning Center, Bee Hive, and a few smaller remodeling proj ects.
