2012-54 CITY OF CHANHASSEN CARVER AND HENNEPIN COUNTIES, MINNESOTA DATE: October 22, 2012 RESOLUTION NO: 2012 -54 MOTION BY: Furlong SECONDED BY: Laufenburger PROCLAMATION DECLARING SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2012 AS BEYOND THE YELLOW RIBBON DAY WHEREAS, the State of Minnesota has developed the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Program, which is a comprehensive program that creates awareness for the purpose of connecting service members and their families with community support, training, services and resources before, during, and after deployment; and WHEREAS, numerous Chanhassen residents have proudly served their country in the Armed Forces; and WHEREAS, the families of those servicemen and women have also served their country through their own sacrifices and support of the service member; and WHEREAS, over the last year, a committed group of volunteers have worked to create a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program in Chanhassen; and WHEREAS, on November 9, 2011, over 100 supporters attended a Kick -Off meeting to officially begin the process of Chanhassen becoming a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon city; and WHEREAS, the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program has enjoyed broad support from Chanhassen businesses, churches, schools and school districts, and civic organizations; and WHEREAS, through the dedicated efforts and accomplishments of the Chanhassen Beyond the Yellow Ribbon steering committee and numerous volunteers, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton officially proclaimed Chanhassen a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon City on October 10, 2012; and WHEREAS, on November 10, 2012, the Chanhassen Beyond the Yellow Ribbon will host the First Annual Military Appreciation Breakfast, in honor of Chanhassen service members and their families, in celebration of the governor's proclamation and in conjunction with Veterans Day and the U.S. Marines Corps 237 Birthday; and WHEREAS, also on November 10, 2012, the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres will host a special program to honor all veterans. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Chanhassen recognizes and extends its appreciation for the extraordinary efforts of the residents and volunteers who worked to secure designation of Chanhassen as a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon city, and for their ongoing support of Chanhassen service members and their families before, during, and after deployments; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Chanhassen recognizes and extends its gratitude for the tremendous dedication and sacrifice made to the United States of America by Chanhassen servicemen and women and their families; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, I, Thomas A. Furlong, Mayor of the City of Chanhassen, do hereby proclaim November 10, 2012, as BEYOND THE YELLOW RIBBON DAY in the City of Chanhassen. I urge all citizens to sustain the initial efforts of the Chanhassen Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, to thank and support the military members and families in our community for their service and sacrifices; and to appreciate and cherish the liberties and freedoms that their service ensures. Moreover, we must not forget the unsung heroes of the mihtary, their spouses, and family members who have sacrificed just as much in defense of this great nation, and WH ER EAS Spouses and family members, as well as our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines, bear an enormous burden throughout the deployment cycle, havmg to not only carry the load of a loved one m harm's way, but also continue to conduct day -to -day duties in support of their family and their military member, and WHEREAS: Support of the Military is at an all nme high, with communities across Minnesota showing support for our troops with yellow ribbons, flags, and saying 'thank you Your community has gone above and beyond, building an enduring network throughout key areas in support of Service Members and families that will be in place long after the yellow ribbons are untied, and bringing great pride to the people of Minnesota and the great United States; and WHEREAS: Through the efforts of the people of Chanhassen, military members and their families enjoy peace of mind knowing they have the appreciation, love, and support of people in this community, and W H EREAS: The Yellow Ribbon Recognition Program pays tribute to those communities with an exceptional record of caring, commitment, and compassion for their military members and families through various programs and public works It is with this commitment to caring that the community of Chanhassen will serve with honor and distinction as a Yellow Ribbon City.
