I SUBJ: Approve Change Order No. 1 for the Installation of Temporary Traffic Signals on West 78th
Street at Great Plains Boulevard - Project No. 92 -3
1 The attached Change Order No. 1 to the West 78th Street Detachment and Downtown Improvement Project
No. 92 -3 involves the installation of a temporary signal at the intersection of West 78th Street at Great Plains
I Boulevard to accommodate the increased traffic which will occur at this intersection due to the summer closure
of Dakota Avenue north of Trunk Highway 5 for the construction of the North Leg Trunk Highway 101
Improvement Project and detour routing through the downtown due to the summer closure of County Road 17
and West 78th Street north of Trunk Highway 5. Given that this temporary installation will benefit the detour
I routing for the Trunk Highway 101 project, MnDOT has agreed to loan the City the necessary hardware, i.e.
signal controller, poles and signal faces at no charge. This in itself is a substantial savings to the City. The City
of Chanhassen does, however, have the responsibility of contracting for the installation of this hardware. Given
I that the West 78th Street Detachment and Downtown Improvement Project has a contract for the installation
of permanent traffic signals which are expected to be installed in late August, this temporary signal work effort
can be most expeditiously handled as a change order with the electrical subcontractor on the project. This
1 temporary signal system is needed to be operational in approximately 4 weeks to accommodate the Trunk /c/
Highway detour routing.
It is therefore recommended that the City Council approve Change Order No. 1 to the West 78th Street
I Detachment and Downtown Improvement Project No. 92 -3 for the installation of the temporary traffic signal at
West 78th Street and Great Plains Boulevard in the amount of $30,719.66.
