MEMORANDUM

1 SUBJ: Targeted Recyclables
1 As you are aware, the Recycling Committee is currently reviewing whether to make changes
to our open collection of solid waste. One of the steps we have taken was to perform a
1 phone survey of residents. At the end of the survey we asked a general summary question as
to what changes, if any, would they make to the current recycling and garbage collection
system better. One of the most predominant responses was to expand the types of recyclables
1 collected at curbside. Last year the Recycling Committee reviewed adding corrugated
cardboard to the targeted recyclables, but we received very negative comments from the
haulers that this would not be feasible. Today, all of the haulers are collecting corrugated
1 cardboard. Other recyclables which are commonly requested to be added are magazines and
mixed paper. All of the haulers are collecting magazines and 4 of the 6 haulers are
collecting mixed paper. .
1 RECOMMENDATION
1 Staff is recommending that the City Council add corrugated cardboard, magazines and mixed
paper as targeted recyclables which are required to be collected curbside by haulers licensed
1 in Chanhassen.
