SUBJ: Parking Restrictions to Facilitate Access to the Senor Center
I '
As the Council is aware, the Senior Center was officially opened over the July 4th weekend.
I The first days of operations saw very high urge. ae of the preliminary events was the first
meeting of the Chanhassen Seniors Club forheir wkly card game and a luncheon at the
center on Thursday, July 2, 1992. While the event siemed to come off very well, there was
I one problem that was evident. The Carve vai d that is used by some of the seniors,
including several who are handicapped acid restricted to wheel chairs, was unable to pull up to
the curb on Coulter Drive since there*re cars already parked in this area. Staff was asked
I by several members of the senior cotiimunity to see if we can resolve this matter as quickly
as possible. _
I Staff acknowledges that this is a concern and had been discussed as a part of the design of
the Senior Center. We had always anticipated the need to come back to the City Council to
gain approval to designate a bus/van/handicapped drop -off area to facilitate use of the center.
1 Due to the fact that this has already become a concern . iip- the center_'s first week of operation,
staff is trying to expedite this request. I have discussed this concern with the City Engineer
and he is in full agreement is a reasonable course of action.
Based upon the foregoing, staff is recommending that the City Council authorize the City
Engineer to design and install signage and other measures to protect a drop -off point for use
I by persons visiting the Senior Center on Coulter Drive in the vicinity of the center's
sidewalk.
