PROPOSED MOTION
"The City Council approves purchase of vehicles and equipment."
City Council approval requires a simple majority vote of the City Council present.
DISCUSSION
Annually, the City considers replacement of vehicles and equipment that have
reached their life expectancy and are showing signs of needing major
maintenance. It has been the City's practice to replace vehicles and equipment
that is over 10 years old before major repairs are required. The vehicle and
equipment needing to be replaced are used extensively and have to be reliable to
maintain appropriate City services.
JUSTIFICATION
STREET DEPARTMENT — DUMP /PLOW TRUCK
The 1995 Ford LS800 single axle dump truck to be replaced is 18 years old. This
vehicle is used for snow plowing, sanding, hauling fill and blacktopping. The
dump box cab and chassis are rusted and the frame is spreading apart from the
years of plowing and hauling. The snow plow is rusted through in many places.
The new truck box would be constructed with stainless steel which will not
corrode like mild steel and would not need to be painted. A sandblast and paint
repair only lasts about 5 years and the cost is $2,500 each time. This will result in
a substantial savings on upkeep and repairs. This truck will be sold at auction
with an estimated resale value of $20,000.
Web Site STREET DEPARTMENT — PICKUPS
www.ci.chanhassen.mn.us The two pickups to be replaced are #110 and #125. They are severely rusted and
# 110 has a rusty frame that is starting to crack and # 125 has rusted fuel and brake
lines. These pickups will be sold at auction at an estimated value of $3,000 each.

STREET DEPARTMENT — SKID LOADER
The 2000 863H Bobcat Skid Loader to be replaced is in need of expensive repairs. The drive chains
in the chain case are getting very loose and the pins and bushings are getting worn. The tires will
need to be replaced soon as well.
UTILITY DEPARTMENT — PICKUP
The 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup to be replaced is 14 years old. The body and chassis, brake and
fuel lines are very rusty. We would replace this truck with a %2 -ton pickup for more fuel economy.
The 1999 Dodge would be sold on auction. The estimated resale value would be around $2,500-
$3,000.
PARK DEPARTMENT — STRIPER
The 12 -year old athletic field line painter is scheduled to be replaced this year. We have been having
mechanical problems of broken axels, bearings going bad and the pump for spraying the paint had to
be replaced.

these purchases are required to maintain a reliable truck fleet. Costs include truck chassis, dump boat, hydraulic system, snow wing, snow plow
and sander. Truck chassis costs are higher due to new federal mandated anti -lock braking requirements effective since 2000. These vehicles are
aurchased using either the Hennepin County or State of MN cooperative bid systems. Orders for truck chassis are typically required to be placed
ip one year in advance of delivery.
placement schedule is as follows:
13 - # 1201995 Ford LS8000 Dump/Plow Truck
14 - # 121 1995 Ford LS8000 Dump/Plow Truck
16 - # 1221996 Ford LS8000 Dump/Plow Truck
17 - # 123 1997 Ford LS8000 Dumn/Plow Truck
Justification
These vehicles are used to provide a variety of maintenance services throughout the community including winter response for plowing and hauling
mow. The average replacement age is 18.5 years. Winter emergency service necessitates these vehicles be reliable and dependable. Growth in the
community creates additional work for these trucks. These vehicle purchases are consistent with the Vehicle Replacement Schedule and are
aurchased through MnDot State contracts..
