Fire Department Overview: Staffing is at 49 active firefighters, there is one firefighter
currently on leave and four new members attending probationary firefighter training. There have
been no retirements year to date in 2013.
YTD calls through January are at 56 versus 30 for 2012.
Staff Time (not call related): Our staff time for community events, fire education, duty crew
standby, mutual aid standby and department meetings are at 272 hours for 2013 compared to 331
hours in 2012.
Training: Training hours for January 2013 were at 373 hours versus 629 hours in the prior year.
In January we focused on completing our mandatory training that is required by OSHA & NFPA
(Right to know, Blood Born Pathogens, Lock Out /Tag Out, etc), EMS re- certification. Our
officers were engaged in Incident Command simulations using the mobile command training
center (CTC) and leadership development. We recognize the need to develop qualified apparatus
operators and will be meeting the need through specialized training through Hennepin Technical
College. 14 members will be taking the class almost doubling the number of qualified operators.
Safety: Safety is always important to us and we embrace the continued health and wellness of
our members through risk reduction endeavors such as health surveillances, our Chaplain
Program, and education. Mr. Mike Music provided us with a safety evaluation of our facilities
and equipment. Maintenance and weekly evaluations of our fleet's readiness is maintained and
we continue to track our Personal Protective Equipment to assure it is operational. We put in
service 45 minute high pressure SCBA air bottles replacing our 30 minute air bottles, increasing
air capacity by 50 %.
Compliance: The annual health surveillance program has been initiated for members with birth
dates in the first quarter.
Fire Study: Springstead Incorporated out of St. Paul, MN was hired to conduct the Master
Planning/Shared Services study for the City of Chanhassen. The site visit occurred on November
12 & 13, 2012. This study is projected to be completed in March of 2013.
Community Activities: Almost a dozen members completed the "Fight for Air Climb" which
was held on February 23 in downtown Mpls. This is an American Lung Association annual
fundraiser that challenges fire departments to raise money and to be the fastest four- person team
to the top of the Accenture Tower in full firefighter PPE and SCBA.
Fire Marshal
Fire Education: There is nothing new to report on at this time.
Fire Investigations: The only fire we had was at Emerson on January 24 at 5:41 am. There was
a small fire in a heat pump above the drop ceiling and was quickly extinguished by fire personnel
with a portable fire extinguisher. There were no injuries reported. Firefighters cleared the scene
at 6:04 am.
Fire inspections: Buildings at various stages of construction/completion. Autobahn Motorplex,
Canine Club, Pro Cuts, Bring It, Liberty Townhomes, K. Hovnanian, Grace Massage, and Retail
Tech. Day care centers' inspections are complete and we will be conducting follow up
inspections there and at our schools.
