I SUBJ: Expand Targeted Recyclables
Each year the Recycling Committee reviews the targeted recyclables which are required to be
I collected at curbside by haulers in Chanhassen. Last year we considered adding more plastics
to the targeted recyclables. Currently, we only require the collection of plastic bottles that you
can drink from. We wanted to expand to code 1 and 2 plastics. The response from haulers was
I to not add any more types of plastic, since they were having a difficult time with marketing what
is collected now. The City did not add to the targeted recyclables in 1991.
I Carver County has a recycling center in Norwood, Minnesota (see attachment). The Recycling
Center collects code 1 and 2 plastic. Staff is again recommending that code 1 and 2 plastic be
added to the targeted recyclables. Ideally, staff would like to include all plastics (1 -7), but the
I marketing of plastics beyond 1 and 2 is very difficult. Code 1 and 2 plastics are the plastics with
the code 1 or 2 on the bottom of the container and are typically pop, milk, detergent, soap, etc.
containers. This year we have not received any objection to adding code 1 and 2 plastic to the
I targeted recyclables from the haulers. The only haulers who have commented, Aagard West and
Chaska, already collect code 1 and 2 plastic. Adding code 1 and 2 does not substantially change
what is currently collected. Adding "code 1 and 2 plastic" does make it easier to under what can
1 be collected since all containers are now coded on the bottom.
On October 13, 1992, the Recycling Committee unanimously recommended that the City Council
1 add code 1 and 2 plastics to the targeted recyclables. If the City Council approves this request,
the haulers have 120 days from approval for it to go into effect.
1 RECOMMENDATION
I Staff recommends the City Council adopt the following motion:
"The City Council approves a resolution which adds code 1 and 2 plastic to the targeted
1 recyclables as noted in Section 16 -1, Definitions, of the City Code."
