SUBJ: Approve Purchase of New Pumps for Lift Station No. 2 and
Authorize Repair Contract to Lift Station No. 2
1 File No. PW -055B
For a number of years, Lift Station No. City's oldest) has been a problematic and unreliable facility which
1
culminated with one pump dying in 1991. Due to the potential property damage that could occur in the event
of a backup in that portion of the sewer system, quotes were acquired to perform the repair work under an
emergency status to help shorten the normal time process. The emergency repair work included a new wet well
I and two larger capacity pumps. Jerry Boucher basically designed, specified and inspected the repair work. This
approach was found to be very successful as the project was completed in a relatively expeditious and cost -
effective manner.
1 It has been known for some time now that a similar situation exists at Lift Station No. 2. Numerous problems
are being experienced and reliability is questionable. With last year's upgrade of Lift Station No. 1, Lift Station
No. 2 is now the oldest of the City's 22 lift stations. The repairs to this lift station, estimated at $30,000, were
I programmed and approved as a part of the budgetary process for 1992. Jerry has acquired three quotes to
perform the lift station upgrade. All three quotes were within $500 with the low being received from J. P. Norex,
Inc. at $13,495. Jerry also obtained quotes for purchasing the new pumps. The low quote was received for the
I ABS pumps (a Flygt equivalent) at a cost of $12,125. In an effort to minimize the costs associated with this
upgrade, it is proposed that Jerry would again inspect and administrate this contract. Total upgrade costs for
the pumps and the contract installation totals $25,610 which is approximately 15% under that originally estimated.
1 It is therefore recommended that the two new pumps for Lift Station No. 2 be purchased from Techniflow
Corporation (ABS 12hp) at a cost of $12,125 and that the installation and wet well contract be awarded to J. P.
Norex, Inc. at a cost of $13,485.

MEMORANDUM
I TO: Charles Folch, City Engineer e41
1 FROM: Jerry Boucher, Utility Superintendent
DATE: March 30, 1992
1 SUBJ: Lift Station No. 2 Upgrade
I Attached are three price quotes for the upgrading of Lift Station
No. 2 for which $30,000 was budgeted for in 1992. These quotes are
for normal conditions usually encountered in performing this kind
I of work. Unforeseen problems such as bad soils, dewatering, etc.
could escalate the cost although this is doubtful. The City
Utility Department will provide the trucks and manpower to haul
away excess dirt, haul in rock and restore the area when the work
1
is completed.
Also attached is a quote from Techniflow Corp. for two brands of
I lift pumps which are essentially equal in quality. These prices
include the pumps and all mechanical and electrical work in the wet
well (parts and labor). These quotes were provided to us by Pete
I Reardon who formerly worked for Waidor Pump Company and who is very
knowledgeable of our situation here. He is the one who performed
the work on Lift Station No. 1 last year and things went very well.
He is the person we use most often if we have major problems with
I our other lift stations and I feel the most capable to do the job
without problems. Chanhassen City specifications on lift pumps ask
for Flyght or equal and the ABS pump is the closest to being equal.
1 Although we do not have any ABS pumps in our system at this time,
I feel that it would be worth trying. There is a cost difference
of $2,594, are 2 HP more than the Flyght and repair costs are
11 cheaper. I would recommend having J. P. Norex perform the
underground work and Techniflow Corp. perform the lift station
electrical and mechanical work using the ABS pumps at a total cost
of $25,610.
